Plans are moving forward for a new place to play at the York Public Library's Children's Room, as local businesses are teaming up to create a children's play space in the area. The project will include donated services from Atlantic Construction, Thane Pearson and AccuPro Painting, to name a few. Be watching The Independent for news on a housewarming party for the new playhouse once it is completed. The rendering pictured above shows the plan for the playhouse. For the second consecutive year, the children at Bertha Rocray's Jack and Jill Nursery School, with a bit of support from their families and friends, have held a fundraising concert to benefit the library.
This year's event, held on Friday, April 28, in the library's community meeting room, featured songs the children have worked on throughout the year.
The children performed for a standing-room-only crowd, and donated all the funds they raised in conjunction with their concert to the library for use as needed in the Children's Room. The total raised at this year's concert was $455.
Last week, several of the children volunteered to visit with York Public Library Director Robert Waldman at the Children's Room to present him with the funds they had raised.
"This is wonderful. This has been a wonderful group that has been supportive of the library for some time," he said, pausing from a puppetry game with Jack and Jill student Jordan McKie.
The children said they love the library, and especially the Children's Room, and wanted to use their love of singing to help the library.
Carrie McKie, Jordan's mother, said it was wonderful to see the children take part in the fundraising event and realize they can use their hard work to help others - even at such a young age.
Rocray agreed.
"They really understand it," she said of the effort. "They certainly do enjoy the library."
Waldman said one option for the funds might be to assist with the purchase of materials for the Children's Room Playhouse, which several local businesses have signed on to help build for the library this summer.
