Lois Pearl Smith
YORK - Lois Pearl (Boynton) Smith, died Sunday, May 14, 2006, surrounded by her children following a courageous battle with cancer. She was born August 24, 1927, in Washington, Maine, the daughter of Goodwin E. and Ruth E. (Overlock) Boynton. She had a fun childhood and often entertained her grandchildren with tales of the escapades she and her siblings devised.
During World War II she volunteered as an aircraft observer and blackout messenger. As a teen she joined the Order of the Eastern Star and she remained a member throughout her life. Lois was class valedictorian at Union High School and was employed by First National Granite Bank where she excelled and soon became administrative assistant to the head of the bank.
On July 3, 1956, Lois married Walter G. Smith Jr. in Fresno, Calif., and embarked on a 15-year adventure as an Air Force wife. The family traveled extensively and Lois created loving homes wherever they were stationed, including New York, Texas, Oregon, Germany and Virginia.
In 1971 the family settled in York after Walter retired from the Air Force and Lois quickly became an active member of the community. She was a devoted member of the First Parish Church in York and served on various committees and as a deacon. She was recently honored for her 20 years of volunteer service at York Hospital, where she will be fondly remembered by all who worked with her.
Lois was devoted to her family and friends and lived for her grandchildren. She never met a child that she didn't enjoy and created hundreds of individualized "cabbage patch dolls" because she just couldn't say "no" to all of the "cute little faces" who found their way to the door. She was a talented baker and designed beautiful cakes for family events, including her daughter's wedding cake.
While in the Air Force, Lois became an avid bowler who rarely found herself "out of money."
Lois will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, dedicated wife and a wonderful and loyal friend whose sense of humor and personal strength are an inspiration to all who knew her.
She will be sadly missed by her son, Jeffrey G. Smith and his wife, Christie H. of Hooksett, N.H.; two daughters, Leisa R. Muccio and her husband, Frank Jr. of Kittery, and Lori I. Koester of Portsmouth, N.H.; eight grandchildren, Anthony T. Muccio, Emily I. Koester, Michelle K. Smith, Olivia P. Smith, Zachary W. Smith, Alexandria A. Higgins, Zeland Muccio and Frank Muccio III; A sister, Eleanor Garside of Windham, and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Her husband, Walter G. Smith Jr., a brother, Rodney Boynton, a sister, Norma Wheeler and a grandson, Edward W. Smith, predeceased her.
A graveside service for Lois will be held on Friday, May 19, at 11 a.m. in the First Parish Cemetery, 180 York Street. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Parish Congregational Church, 180 York Street, York, ME 03909 or to York Hospital, 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909.
