
A river literally runs through Logging Road in the Mount Agamenticus region of York as this weekend's torrential rains fed streams and rivers that tore through this and other roadways, wiping out culverts, gravel, pavement and even guardrails. This week's edition of
The Independent offers a closer look at the damage of the estimated 12-plus inches of rain that have fallen on the region so far, as well as the work York is doing to recover from the state of emergency.

If there was one part of town that fared worst in this weekend's deluge of rain, it was York Beach. Above, a York Beach firefighter paddles through what was, one day earlier, an access way from the York Beach Ball Field to the shops of York Beach and to Ellis Park itself. This photograph, taken on Sunday, May 14, shows the surge of freshwater that battered businesses and apartments in the center of York Beach. According to officials, the flooding came as a result of rain and freshwater runoff alone and not due to the ocean.

Like its neighbors to the north, south and west, the town of Ogunquit fell victim to nature's wrath as rains continued through the weekend and the early part of the week, turning quiet rivers and streams into raging waterways. Above, Captain Thomas Road at the Wells-Ogunquit town line is just one of several throughout the two towns that has been decimated by the storm.
