Headlines from York and Ogunquit, Maine

It is official. York Beach is open for the season. While some businesses must remain closed as they rebuild and restock from the Mother's Day weekend flood, most York Beach establishments have either opened already or will be open in time for this weekend's official start to the summer tourism season. Above, volunteers and York police can be seen at work along Railroad Avenue in a clean-up day sponsored by the Greater York Region Chamber of Commerce just after the floodwaters subsided on Wednesday, May 17.

Jim Biagioni describes the devastation his family's York Beach shop, The Candy Corner, suffered as a result of the Mother's Day weekend flooding in the area. While most shops in York Beach are set to open this weekend or have opened already, Jim said told Sen. Olympia J. Snowe, R-Maine, could be as late as the July 4 weekend before the damage to The Candy Corner is remedied and he and his family are back to doing what they love: making candy and meeting the people of York and the visitors to town who come to their shop each summer.

There's a message being sent from local businesses to their neighbors around town and to the visitors soon to arrive for the summer season: York Beach is open. Of the town's 10,149 registered voters, a total of 4,001 - or roughly 40 percent - filled out absentee ballots or headed to the polls on Saturday to decide budget requests, land proposals and who will lead the town in the years ahead. The town is working at breakneck speed to get itself back to normalcy after the Mother's Day storm flooded cellars and caused road erosion that stretched town resources to the maximum. Discussions are continuing on the subject of whether the York School Department should enter into a partnership with the town of Ogunquit to bring the 44 students from that town into the local schools.
