It's time for art and animals at the York Public Library this summer

YORK VILLAGE - The month of June marks the start of the York Public Library's Summer Reading Program and the opening of a new exhibit from a local artist.

Ogunquit resident Don Gorvett's work will be on display beginning June 6 and on through July.

On Wednesday, June 14, at 6 p.m. you can hear a Gallery Talk by Gorvett, who is widely recognized for his work in the reduction woodcut technique and has exhibited his prints nationally and internationally.

Gorvett is a graduate of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, where he was awarded a Ford Fellowship. His works can be found in the Portland Museum of Art, Ogunquit Museum of American Art, Cape Ann Historical Society and Duxbury Art Complex, as well as in numerous corporate and private collections.

He is also a board member of the Boston Printmakers and Ogunquit Art Association.

Beginning in late June, the library's Children's Room will celebrate its always-popular Summer Reading Program, "Paws, Claws, Scales and Tales," by hosting a number of different events.

On June 27, come watch "Homeward Bound," the first of nine animal-themed films to be shown on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. in July and August.

Then, on Thursday, June 29, at 11 a.m., join Kittery Police Officer Jay Durgin and his K-9 partner Hannah, who was named Region 9's "Drug Dog of the Year" for a talk and demonstration. This program is for children between the ages of 8 and 11.

Children's Librarian Kathleen Whalin promises many more events for the summer weeks. For more, check out Library Happenings right here each week, call the library at 363-2818 or visit www.york.lib.me.us.
