York upsets Cape 1-0 in fog

York scored the only run of the game in the fourth inning when Matt Prewitt led off with a single. Prewitt was picked off but Matt Haight was safe on an error after attempting a sacrifice bunt. Then after Maran flied out Dan Graziano followed with a single. Chris Knox then singled to drive in Haight with the only run of the game.

Cape was at bat in the bottom of the seventh with the fog rolling in and playing conditions getting worse by the minute. After one out a Cape player lofted a fly ball into the air and "it came to earth I know not where". Coach Lewis explained, "No one could see the ball. None of our fielders and neither of the umpires. The umpires then decided to hold the game for 30 minutes to see if the fog would blow off and make it safe to continue. The fog never lifted and the game was ruled official after six innings."

Back on May 4 Cape had rolled to a 13-1 six inning win in York so this was sweet revenge for the Wildcats but one disappointed Caper fan grabbed the mike and yelled at the umpires that it was a bush call.

This win should ensure that York makes the playoffs but their final game will not be played until May 30 and final seedings need to be available so playoffs may start June 6, with semi-finals scheduled for June 8 and Western Maine finals on June 10.

Traip Academy 3-Wildcats 1

Last Thursday the York Wildcats baseball team (8-6) got another good pitching performance from freshman Jimmy Kennedy but made three errors and gave up three unearned runs. York took the lead with a single run in the top of the second but Traip (8-6) countered with single runs in the second, third and fourth innings. Sophomore DH Nick Mercurio led the York batters with three hits, including a double, but the Wildcats could not come up with a key hit with men on base.

Pitching Coach Fred Knox said, "I was pleased with the complete game pitching of Kennedy but our team is not hitting in the clutch."

Poland 16-York 4

York had defeated Poland 5-1 on May 10 but the Knights were out for revenge when they visited York last Wednesday, May 24. Poland (8-4) had been steadily improving and brought their "A" game when they led off with five runs in the first including two home runs over the center field fence. York was in the midst of playing five games in five days and was forced to use three pitchers but Poland added two runs in the second and two in the fourth before salting the game away with seven in the sixth.

The Wildcats countered with a lead off home run over the left field fence by Dan Graziano in the second and three in the fourth paced by a single to left by Kevin Maran, another single to left by Graziano and a RBI double by Cole. York managed just four hits on the day. Cole, Ryan MacGlashing and David Knieves handled the pitching chores with Jared Turner doing the catching. York Head Coach Gordon Lewis could only say, "This was a better team than the one we beat two weeks ago".

Falmouth upsets York 3-1

Last Tuesday, May 23, the York Wildcats (8-4) took their four game winning streak on the road to Falmouth (7-4) but ran into a hot pitcher and lost to the Yachtsmen by the final score of 3-1. Matt Prewitt led off for the Wildcats with a base hit in the first inning and came around to score York's only run. Kal Decato pitched a complete game for York and allowed single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings. A disappointed York pitching coach, Fred Knox, commented, "Decato pitched well but we couldn't get our bats working. Kevin Maran handled the catching chores and Prewitt had two hits but other than that they shut us down pretty good."
