After weeks of waiting, the town has received the news it was hoping for: a declaration from President George Bush that allows Federal Emergency Management Agency funding for the efforts to rebuild roads, businesses and private residences damaged or destroyed in the Mother's Day weekend floods. On Memorial Day, the hundreds of local residents who turned out to participate in the annual parades and ceremonies in York and Ogunquit were asked never to forget the sacrifices made by the servicemen and women who have fought to keep the country free. When the Mother's Day rains ended in flooding and road closures, some residents voiced concerns about what the resulting costs would mean for their tax bills, and hinted they would be scrutinizing all prior budget requests at the town vote. When the votes were tallied after the May 20 election the message was loud and clear that local residents want to keep growth controls in place and that the majority does not want more than 84 new residences in town each year. The former chairwoman of the Historic District Commission wants a Charter Commission to look into the duties of the Planning Board and Appeals Board. In the wake of the Mother's Day floods, town and emergency management officials continue to work on recovery efforts and to address new problems, including at least a few contaminated wells. Mary Poppins is coming to town! A request by the Historic District Commission for developers to provide symmetry to the roof of the reconstructed Atlantic House in York Beach came under study by the Appeals Board. From reactions to the Mother's Day storm and its impact on town to ordinance changes for the town's future, the Planning Board reviewed a full agenda at its May 25 meeting. The York High School Chamber Singers have achieved a goal that many musicians never dream of attaining: they have performed at New York City's Carnegie Hall. Those who have worked for over a year to bring a York High School Arts Wing project to the ballot are in the process of regrouping after the request failed by a margin of about 400 votes at the May 20 election.
