For the Brownie Girl Scouts of York's Troop 1100, Wednesday, May 24, was more than just a regular meeting day. Earlier this year, the girls designed two patches for the Girl Scouts of Kennebec Council's Add-a-Girl Patches contest. Last week, Kennebec Council Membership and Marketing Manager Tammy Murray arrived at their meeting to award each girl with an Add-a-Girl patch - as they had won the last contest for the special patches. Above, Murray (far right) and Troop Leader Lynn Osgood pose with the Brownies (front, from left) Grace Bettinson, Katherine Bullock, Katie Mahoney, Hannah Berger, Enya Childs, Abby Beaulieu and (back row) Carly Osgood, Rachel Stevenson, Emily Bird and Abby Mahoney and their award-winning patch design. It was the one place in town where the most memorable of William Shakespeare's characters of old could be seen amidst jousting knights, Queen Elizabeth I and even "The Bard" himself. Ogunquit Performing Arts has announced that the Ogunquit Chamber Music Festival will expand its format to include a fourth concert that will take place June 14 at 8 p.m. at the Barn Gallery The season has begun!
"Ocean and Sky," an exhibit by York's own Heather Lewis Rocray, begins this Friday, June 9, at Kennedy Studios in Portsmouth, N.H. Rocray, above, is the featured artist for the month of June at Kennedy Studios, located at 41 Market St. in Portsmouth. She brings her recent studies: land and seascapes, dragonflies and butterflies from her new home in Rockland, Maine. The opening reception is Friday, June 9, from 5 to 8 p.m. According to the studio, "She continues to deliver both visual and emotional vitality through her love of color, texture and pattern. And reminiscent of another time and place, her signature script floats in and out of the entire exciting exhibit."

With the official opening of the Old York Historical Society's summer season slated for this Saturday, the society's youngest historical interpreters, educators and curators ever spent last week brushing up on their knowledge of local history. If you have some time to spare and would like to get involved with the community, meet new people, have fun and support a good cause, please call the Old York Historical Society right away. York Parks and Recreation's summer programs are filling up fast as parents scramble to safeguard their kids from summer boredom. In an era when cinema multiplexes dot the landscape and moviegoers have a choice between three and 23 movies all under one utilitarian roof, the Leavitt Fine Arts Theater is a delightful relic of earlier times. The York High School Music Department is pleased to announce its Choral Spring Concerts to be held at St. Christopher's Church in York Village on Thursday, June 8, and Friday, June 9. Dragon Summer is arts and literacy programming for children entering the fourth- through eighth grades.
