JUNE 7

The United Way of York County's 11th Annual Day of Caring brings together over 800 volunteers from businesses and schools across York County to provide a variety of assistance non-profit organizations. UWYC and the people of York County work to build a stronger community all year long, but Day of Caring is an event that tangibly demonstrates this drive.

Bird-banding demonstration at the Wells Reserve at Laudholm Farm, 9am. Look at birds up close as researchers investigate bird health and behavior through a long-term monitoring program. FMI: 646-1555.

York Land Trust Monitoring Walk of the Webster Conservation Property. Monitoring walks generally take 2 to 3 hours and are scheduled for the first Wednesday or the third Saturday of each month. 12th Annual Chamber Music Festival will open with the Ambrosia Trio from New York City performing music of Mozart, Schostakovich, and Ravel. Festival runs June 8, 9, 10, and 14. Join Old York Historical Society as it celebrates Opening Day for Old York museums on June 10, 10am to 5pm. In the morning, meet the new Elizabeth Perkins Fellows, see the new exhibition in the Emerson-Wilcox House and tour the museum buildings and grounds. In the afternoon from 2 until 5pm, join us for special activities: At 2:00 and again at 3:30 take a connoisseur tour with Curator Tom Johnson.

See protected land parcels on the York Land Trust Conservation Drive-About Tour on June 10. The trust manages 35 properties with a total of almost 1500 acres. The popular Drive-About tour showcases many of the important protected parcels with special emphasis on locations that allow public access. Meet at 10am, York Land Trust Office, 449 US Route 1, York (across from Hannifords). This event is free and open to the public. Please call 363-7400 to register. The tour takes 2 hours. Market Square Day 10K Race starts at 9am in Market Square and finishes at historic Strawbery Banke. Application fees are $18 until midnight on June 7, and $20 beginning Thursday, June 8 through the day of the race. Bib/ChampionChip® pick up and registration takes place at the Connie Bean Recreation Center on June 9 (9am - 5pm) and on Saturday, June 10 (7am - 8:45am). Market Square Day 2006, Downtown, Portsmouth, NH. A day of family fun with crafts people, vendors, road race, musicians and performers from 9am to 5pm. The event, often referred to as the unofficial start to Summer on the Seacoast, draws on average 1,200 runners for the 10K race and 80,000 festival-enthusiasts to the heart of the Portsmouth. Outdoor Girls event at Wood Frog Hollow (330 Mountain Rd in Cape Neddick, Maine) from 10am to 3pm. Outdoor Girls is a full-day program that aims to help girls deepen their connection to the natural world and herself through exploration, hands-on projects, games, survival skills, and more. We usually spend most, if not all, of our time outdoors - exploring nature, building relationships, and learning all the while. Girls ages 8-13 years old are welcome. Outdoor Boys event at Wood Frog Hollow (330 Mountain Rd in Cape Neddick, Maine) from 10am to 3pm. New Castle Village Walk and Garden Tour to Benefit Pontine: On Sunday, June 11, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., rain or shine, nine New Castle gardens will be open for a self-guided walk. Several gardens will be located in the area surrounding the Wentworth Hotel. Complimentary rides by Seacoast Trolley will be available. Tickets are available in advance for $12 at Rye Ridge Greenery, 630 Washington Road in Rye, Portsmouth Gardens at 1000 Woodbury Avenue in Portsmouth, or Wentworth Greenhouses at 141 Rollins Road in Rollinsford. Old York Historical Society presents the exhibit "Real, Reproduction or Outright Fake?" Not everything is what it appears to be, especially in the world of antiques and museum collections. What does a museum curator or collector look for to determine if a piece is real, reproduction, or fake? A season-long exhibit in the Long Parlor Gallery of Old York's Emerson-Wilcox House will show examples of furniture, glass, ceramics, textiles and other decorative arts that will both test and inform the visitor about what to look for to determine authenticity and value. Exhibit opens June 10 and runs through October 8. Hours: Monday-Saturday Noon-2pm. The opening reception will be Friday evening, June 9, 5-7pm.

George Marshall Store Gallery presents MECA - Connections - and Jim Wilkinson's abstract paintings from June 10 - July 16. Selected works by faculty of the Maine College of Art will be on display in the main level gallery. Jim Wilkinson's abstract paintings will be shown in the dock level gallery. Jim Wilkinson graduated from the Portland School of Art in 1971 (the predecessor of the Maine College of Art). Since then he has been committed to abstract painting.
