Town Meeting in Ogunquit set for Tuesday, June 13 primary election

By C. Ayn Douglass

OGUNQUIT - Local voters are being reminded to vote on Tuesday, June 13, on five articles on the special town warrant.

The election is being held in conjunction with the statewide primary.

Absentee ballots are available during business hours at the town clerk's office at Dunaway Center. According to Town Clerk Judy Shaw-Kagieliery, 10 voters have taken the opportunity to vote absentee on the warrant issues.

Voters will be deciding the following warrant articles as listed on the ballot:

"Shall the Town vote to appropriate from surplus fund balance, a sum not to exceed $100,000 to fund the costs of Capital Improvement Projects as approved by the voters at the April 1, 2006, Annual Town Meeting?"

The voters have already approved the CIP projects and this article will authorize the approved purchases.

"Shall the Town vote to expend no more than $9,000 from undesignated surplus funds for the purchase of a 2003 Crown Victoria police vehicle for use by the Department's Lieutenant?"

The Budget Review Committee voted against the article on the basis that the item should go before the voters as a capital expense next year. The Board of Selectmen voted in favor of the article as funding is available from money left over from the purchase of a police vehicle approved by the voters in April.

"Shall the Town vote to accept the donation of a small boat from the former Clam Digger Restaurant?"

The boat is on display at Dorothea Jacobs Grant Common and, if voters accept it, all costs and liabilities for it will be the town's responsibility.

Voters will also decide two items brought forward by citizen petition.

The first asks citizens to request U.S. Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins make a motion to be voted on by the Senate to censure President George Bush for his approval of a domestic spying program of U.S. citizens when legal options were available to him; his undertaking of the war in Iraq and his refusal to veto any spending bills during his term in office.

The last article would amend the zoning ordinance to allow Type 2 restaurants - those that permit outside dining - in the Limited Business District, subject to site plan review. The ordinance would affect establishments along Shore Road.
