The Animal Welfare Society is more than just dogs and cats

YORK - When many people thank of an animal shelter, they think of adoptable dogs and cats.

Did you know that the Animal Welfare Society in Kennebunk cares for many more types of animals than that? At any given time the society can have rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, mice, rats and more available and waiting for adoption.

"These animals can make wonderful companions for the right family and will provide years of love and joy," said Katie Dolloff of the Animal Welfare Society.

Do you think a small animal is right for you? There are lots of things to consider before adopting. For example, rabbits are domesticated and prefer to be kept indoors. An ideal set up is a fully floored hutch with sleeping area, hiding spots and litterboxes. Yes, litterboxes! Rabbits can be trained to use a box, just like a cat. They also need plenty of time outside of their hutch to play and get needed exercise. Keep in mind that they will need to be supervised when out playing because rabbits are known to chew things like wood and wires. If a rabbit sounds like a pet you would be interested in, stop by the shelter. We have many rabbits currently residing at the shelter that are in need of a home - preferably yours.

If a rabbit is not for you, what about a guinea pig? These little creatures are cute, funny, curious and friendly. They are larger and easier to handle than a hamster or mouse, so they can make great pets for older children who want a companion for their room. These little guys need a guinea pig hutch with fresh hay, wood shavings and the appropriate food. They also appreciate sleeping areas and hiding spots. Guinea pigs make the cutest little warbles and squeals when they are happy and make great companions.

"We currently have many guinea pigs, both pairs and single companions for you to get to know," Dolloff noted.

If you're looking for a pet that is a bit more active and silly, then a ferret might be the right friend for you.

"We currently have nine ferrets that are in need of loving homes," she said. "They are wonderful pets that do require a special cage set up and plenty of time out of the cage for play and exercise."

Ferrets are goofy and clumsy little guys that can squeeze into the tiniest places, so they do need to be monitored when on the loose. Ferrets like to live in groups, so please adopt at least two so that they have friends to play with even when you aren't home. Visit the shelter and the staff can introduce you to these furry friends.

All of the animals here at the AWS are waiting for special people to adopt them. If you've been thinking of a new pet for your family, please think of the shelter as your best place to find a loving companion that will suit your lifestyle. AWS adoption counselors are ready to help find that perfect furry friend.
