Clippers eliminate Wildcats 14-6

By Stan Ross

Last week Tuesday June 6, the ninth seeded Yarmouth Clippers (9-8) defeated the York High Wildcats (9-8) in a Western Maine preliminary game by the final score of 14-6. For the Wildcats and their loyal fans it was a disappointing end to what had been an exciting season. This young team, with only two seniors, won more games than any York high school baseball team "in my memory" said Athletic Director Ted Welch. "We will have a lot of talent returning next year. Our JV baseball team finished with a very respectable record of 10-3."

York raced to an early 5-0 lead in the second inning. Dan Graziano led off with a single to left and Chris Knox followed with a perfect hit and run single to right. Then Jeff Cole followed with an RBI single to left and Ryan MacGlashing added a single to center. Danny Moran walked with the bases loaded to drive in a run but Yarmouth brought in relief pitcher Rob Dzialo and Matt Prewitt's line drive was speared by short stop Chan Arndt. The Wildcats still had the bases loaded and only one out but Jared Turner's bid for extra bases was speared by second baseman Ross Simms. Matt Haight walked to drive in York's third run of the inning and Kevin Moran lined a sharp single to left to drive in two more.

With a 5-0 lead and junior pitcher Danny Moran (7-0) on the mound the York fans were hoping for another win but Yarmouth countered with a two run home run by Adam Reutty in the third. York was held scoreless in the third, fourth and fifth innings while the Clippers added an unearned run in the fourth and blew the game open with eight big runs including a two run homer by John Melville and a three run poke by Reutty in the fatal fifth inning. York used three relief pitchers, freshman Jimmy Kennedy, sophomore Kal Decato, and junior Ryan MacGlashing but nothing could take the wind out of the Clippers sails on this day. Yarmouth added a bases empty homer by Brian Tupper in the sixth and another two run shot by Reutty in the seventh. Reutty had three home runs and seven RBI and Yarmouth scored 10 of their 14 runs on five homers while York could only counter with a solo home run by sophomore Nick Richard to lead off the sixth inning.

One veteran observer commented, "I cannot wait to see how this young team (one freshman and eight sophomores) performs next year. It seems too bad that York will not have a Legion team or any other summer baseball for these high school players."
