Currents in Education

Students in York's Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program pose with York School Resource Officer Scott Cogger on Friday morning, June 9, after being selected as the Top 10 DARE-Elks Club Poster Contest Winners for 2006. Pictured, from top left, are York Elks Club Drug Awareness Coordinator Kim Wynne, Riggs Alosa, Corina Fitzgerald, Sarah Palmer, Gabe Mata and Nick Eaton. The bottom row is Sarah Garfield, Anna Swiatek, Tory Knoepfel, Erin Sheahan and Cogger. Wynne is holding Josh Donahoe's poster, who was absent during Friday's event. These ten students will receive a $50 savings bond. All 150-plus fifth-grade DARE students entered the contest and Cogger said they all did a great job.

It was a day of remembering the past, hoping for the future and savoring the present. In 2002, a massive cut to the York School Department's operating budget necessitated a move that had been discussed for years: the reconfiguration of grades at Coastal Ridge and Village Elementary Schools. While school will officially end for the academic year this Friday, June 23, it's hardly over for many local teachers or for the York School Department's administrators. Family members, friends and supporters were on hand as Wells-Ogunquit Adult Community Education held its 2006 graduation ceremony on Tuesday, June 13, in the Wells High School Auditorium.
