A library card - look what it can do for you!
By York Public Library Assistant Director Sudie Blanchard
There's no time like the present to get a library card - it's your key to books and beyond.York Public Library cards are free to those who live in York. To get one, all you'll need to do is show that you live or pay taxes in the town of York. A driver's license with your York address on it, a utility bill for your York property or a copy of your town of York tax bill will do the trick.
If you don't live in York, but would like to use the library, you can purchase a non-resident library card for $25 a year. We have reciprocal borrowing agreements with the Wells and Ogunquit libraries. If you live in those towns, all you need to do is present your town's library card at our main circulation desk to qualify for a York Public Library card.
With library card in hand, you can easily reserve books - even the most popular best sellers, videos, DVDs, CD and cassette recordings from this library or one of the other 80-plus libraries in the Minerva consortium. With the statewide delivery service the library now offers, they'll come quicker than ever before.
You can renew items. Books and recorded books circulate for three weeks; videotapes and DVDs may be borrowed for one week.
You can also get access to a wide range of full-text magazine articles on MARVEL, a large number of research databases provided by Maine.
If you are unsure about how to do all this, a friendly library staff member or volunteer will be happy to show you the ropes.
You can access library resources from any computer with Internet access - in the comfort of one's own home, at work or here at the library - at all hours of the day and night. The "library without walls" has arrived! Check us out at www.york.lib.me.us.
Of course, you don't need a library card to be able to visit the library, relax, read a book, catch up on the news, or read your email - and don't forget to check out the Book Nook while you're here and buy a book or two for your beach reading!
Remember, new library hours begin July 1: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The library will be closed on Sundays and Mondays
