York Town News

The Knights of Columbus Star of the Sea Council 11940 of York recently sponsored a send-off to show support for our troops. Members of the 101st Airborne received a warm welcome to Pease in nearby Newington, N.H., along with a patriotic good-bye upon leaving en route to Iraq. Pictured are Worthy Grand Knight Gregory Molda and Capt. Edmund Johnson, commandant of the Seacoast Detachment Marine Corps League, preparing to welcome the 101st Airborne to New Hampshire. The Military Charter stopped at Pease to refuel on the way to Iraq.

It was a day of remembering the past, hoping for the future and savoring the present. More than a month has passed since torrential rains and rising floodwaters ravaged local roads, businesses and homes, but state and federal government agencies remain on call to help those still struggling to rebuild after the Mother's Day storm. When the Board of Selectmen meets next week, one item that is expected to be on the agenda is a closer look at parking in the vicinity of the town's seaside business district. There seems to be no problem with the Maine Department of Transportation's plans to replace the collapsed Passaconaway Bridge with a three-span structure, but the same can't be said of the question of what rails to use on the bridge or a decision not to include sidewalks. On Saturday, June 10, the York Land Trust acquainted the public with some of the properties it has worked to protect with a drive-about tour. The York Water District has installed a new guardrail along Chase's Pond Road where the rural roadway winds toward the pond. While school will officially end for the academic year this Friday, June 23, it's hardly over for many local teachers or for the York School Department's administrators. The show was short in duration, but there was much to be seen - including evidence of some extraordinary talent.
