It was a day of remembering the past, hoping for the future and savoring the present. There seems to be no problem with the Maine Department of Transportation's plans to replace the collapsed Passaconaway Bridge with a three-span structure, but the same can't be said of the question of what rails to use on the bridge or a decision not to include sidewalks. When the Board of Selectmen meets next week, one item that is expected to be on the agenda is a closer look at parking in the vicinity of the town's seaside business district. In 2002, a massive cut to the York School Department's operating budget necessitated a move that had been discussed for years: the reconfiguration of grades at Coastal Ridge and Village Elementary Schools.
The man known as the "unofficial goodwill ambassador for Perkins Cove," artist George Carpenter, passed away Sunday, June 18. His business hours at his gallery, located in the cove since 1962, reflect Carpenter's quirky sense of humor. The sign reads, "Business Hours: Open most days at 9:00 or 10:00. Sometimes as early as 8:00, but occasionally as late as 12:00 or 1:00. We close about 4:00 or 5:00. But once in a while as late as 9:00 or 10:00. Lately we're here most days except Mondays when we're never here except sometimes." The gallery is currently closed indefinitely. Read story

The town's fire and rescue personnel responded to a call from George Carpenter's Perkins Cove gallery Sunday morning, but were unable to save the life of this former resident and longtime Ogunquit artist. Two items brought forward by petition on the June 13 warrant were not unanimously accepted by local voters.
