Municipal Funding of Community Conservation, a presentation by Matt Zieper, research director of the Trust for Public Land's Conservation Finance Program. Communities across southern Maine are searching for creative ways to strike a balance between growth and maintaining community character. This seminar will address both the why and the how of municipal bonding for conservation, with special attention paid to the unique challenges of southern Maine. Founder's Day Parade at the Seashore Trolley Museum will be held to celebrate Independence Day and the museum's birthday (the museum was founded on July 5, 1939). Many trolleys in our collection that don't normally see regular service are brought out for exhibit and to be run past the reviewing stand for our visitors, while a commentary is given with a brief history of each trolley. The Brick Store Museum holds its 70th Anniversary Celebration with a new display on the history of the Museum, plus cake and ice cream and a chance to leave birthday greetings for the Museum. JULY 4
28th annual 4 on the Fourth road race, sponsored by the York Rotary Club. The four-mile course has become one of the most popular raced in the seacoast area. The scenic York beaches are surely an attraction along with free T-shirts to the first 400 overall entrants. The 4th of July is traditionally a family day and the "4 on the Fourth" road race offers a festive family atmosphere to running families and spectators. Refreshments will be available following the race. Check-in and registration will open at the starting line at 6:00 a.m. at the York High School, Long Sands Road. The gun will fire at 8 a.m. There will be a $100 cash prize awarded to each of the overall male and female winners. A one mile Fun Run will immediately follow this run. Pre-registration $12 / Race Day $15.

York Beach Historical Walking Tour. Join Old York for an historical overview of the architectural and cultural changes that have evolved since the late 19th century while walking through the historic village. Your guide will use historic photographs from the Old York Historical Society collections illustrating the "then and now." The tour lasts about an hour. Meet at the Gazebo in Ellis Park at Short Sands Beach, 4pm, $5 per person. Free to Old York members.

Old York Historical Society presents "Real, Reproduction or Outright Fake?" Not everything is what it appears to be, especially in the world of antiques and museum collections. What does a museum curator or collector look for to determine if a piece is real, reproduction, or fake? A season-long exhibit in the Long Parlor Gallery of Old York's Emerson-Wilcox House will show examples of furniture, glass, ceramics, textiles and other decorative arts that will both test and inform the visitor about what to look for to determine authenticity and value. Exhibit opens June 10 and runs through October 8. Hours: Monday-Saturday Noon-2pm.
George Marshall Store Gallery presents MECA Connections and Jim Wilkinson's abstract paintings from June 10 - July 16. Selected works by faculty of the Maine College of Art will be on display in the main level gallery. Jim Wilkinson's abstract paintings will be shown in the dock level gallery. Jim Wilkinson graduated from the Portland School of Art in 1971 (the predecessor of the Maine College of Art). Since then he has been committed to abstract painting. The Beth Ellis Cove Gallery's third annual Small Works Exhibition of original oils is on display from July 1 to July 16. Beth Ellis' new works showcase the shorelines of southern Maine, the splendor of Connecticut and the unparallel beauty of Monehegan Island. Ogunquit Museum of American Art presents two new exhibits from July 1 to August 21: 139th annual American Watercolor Society International Juried Exhibit: Founded in 1866 as "the American Society of Painters in Water Color", the American Watercolor Society is one of this nation's most prestigious arts organizations. Included in this traveling exhibition are approximately 50 paintings chosen by the 2006 AWS Jury of Selection. The other exhibit is Britain in Black & White: Photographs by Conrad Marvin. Conrad Marvin studied photography with Ansel Adams, John Sexton, and at the DeCordova Museum School. Marvin says: "When I photograph I do not aim simply to reproduce an object or a scene, I try to capture the essence of the moment: the sights, the moods, and the atmosphere." The Barn Gallery's annual open show Regional Artists will take place June 28 through July 30. Also, OAA Expressions, a varied and exciting exhibition by artists of the Ogunquit Art Association will be shown in the Lower Gallery. Two printmakers, Nancy R. Davison and Hara Harding, will exhibit etchings, linocuts, woodcuts and monoprints in the newly renovated North Gallery. Invited New England Sculptors will continue to show their work in the outdoor Sculpture Court. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The Barn Gallery is located at the corner of Shore Road and Bourne Lane in Ogunquit. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat will be playing at Hackmatack Playhouse, 538 School Street, Berwick, from June 22 to July 8. The Biblical story of Joseph and his coat of many colors comes to vibrant life in this, Andrew LLoyd Webber's first hit.
