Library Happenings

There's a brand new addition to the York Public Library's Children's Room: the library's very own playhouse. Modeled after the popular durable wooden play area built for York Hospital's Emergency Department, the library's new play space has a character all its own: red, festive and reminiscent of York's maritime heritage. The project was made possible by several local businesses who worked with volunteers from the library's Children's Programming Committee to take the playhouse from concept to construction. Pictured, from left, children of some of those volunteers Ian Morosoff, Kayla Edminster, Lily Whelan, Collin Edminster and Caitie Edminster and (front row, from left) Emily Barnes and Isaac Morosoff, give the playhouse a try. The structure was installed at the library last week after months of work by such local businesses as Atlantic Construction, Thane Pearson and AccuPro Painters. The committee volunteers initiated the idea of a playhouse, but as Chairwoman Julie Edminster pointed out, it was the business community made it happen. Visit the library's Children's Room to see the playhouse firsthand, or visit www.york.lib.me.us to find out more about what's happening at the library.

Ongoing

There's no time like the present to get a library card - it's your key to books and beyond. The Friends of the York Public Library are sponsoring a Book Sale from July 20 through July 22. Few regions in the world provoke more interest, controversy, passions or international crises and conflicts than the Middle East. The York Public Library has extended its popular Sunday Film Festival series through the summer. Spring segues into summer, and from the dawn chorus of returning birds to the trill of tree frogs on balmy nights, nature everywhere seems to hum with delight. Anyone who's been in the library recently may have noticed a big change.
