York Hospital Breast Cancer Survivor Group's Walk for Hope is next week
YORK BEACH - On Thursday, Aug. 3, at 5:45 p.m., the York Hospital Breast Cancer Survivor Group will have the opening ceremony for its Seventh Annual Walk for Hope.All are invited to join the group at the York Beach Ball Field as the two-mile stroll to Long Sands Beach and optional five-mile loop begin at 6 p.m.
The walk is organized entirely by volunteers. All of the money raised will support breast cancer causes here in the state of Maine and over $100,000 has been raised in the past six years. This year all the money raised will be given to the Maine Breast Cancer Coalition, Maine Cancer Foundation and York Hospital Wellness Center.
Registration will be held under the tent at the ballpark beginning at 5 p.m. A $15 entry fee entitles participants to a T-shirt and to enter their names for door prizes.
The closing ceremony and door prize drawings will immediately follow the walk, and special prizes will be given to walkers with pledges of $250 or more.
The York Hospital Breast Cancer Survivor Group meets the third Monday of each month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Ellis Conference Room at York Hospital. The group welcomes new members, whether or not their treatment was at York Hospital. Friends are also welcome at the meetings, where members share information and coping tips and strategies, explore complimentary therapies, hear guest speakers, support each other, experience sisterhood, plan the Annual Walk for Hope and celebrate living.
In 2005, the Maine Cancer Foundation awarded the group with its Citizen Advocate Award for its ability to provide leadership and increase awareness within the community.
Donations in the form of checks made payable to the York Hospital Breast Cancer Walk will be accepted at the walk on Thursday, Aug. 3, or may be sent in advance to P.O. Box 851, Ogunquit, ME 03907.
Pledge sheets are available at various locations including the York Hospital Oncology and York Hospital Wellness Center.
As of last week, sponsors for this year's event included Chiropractic Works, Curves for Women of York, Hannaford of York, Starbucks of Kittery, The Financial Consultant, Starkey Ford, Timeless Images and Memories, York Family Practice and York Hospital.
