Keeping cool at the York Public Library

By York Public Library Assistant Director Sudie Blanchard

YORK VILLAGE - These hot August days, the library is one of the coolest places to be in town.

So when you've had enough sun at the beach and the heat is too much for you, remember to visit the library. We can provide lots of books, DVDs - and even a magazine - with chilly themes, along with a cool place to relax and read them.

Here are just a few titles with chilly capabilities: "Winter Solstice," "Snow Falling on Cedars," "Breath of Snow and Ashes," "In the Bleak Mid-Winter," "The Ultimate Ice Cream Book," "March of the Penguins," "Ice Island"- and the magazine, "Transworld Snowboarding."

We also have a couple of "cool" events coming up this week that will interest many.

This Thursday, Aug.10, at 10:30 a.m., don't miss the third and final presentation in this year's Family Fun Series. "Double Vision," two performing artists, who offer a zany mix of juggling, mime, comic characterization, mystifying illusions and classic vaudeville, will be here to fascinate and amaze people of all ages.

This event is co-sponsored by the York Public Library and York Parks and Recreation Department. Kennebunk Savings Bank and the Friends of the York Public Library have helped fund the series this year.

The Summer Film Festival continues on Sunday, Aug. 13, at 6 p.m. with family favorite "The Sound of Music," starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer.

This heart-warming film is based on the true story of the von Trapp family and their daring escape over the mountains of Austria to safety at the beginning of World War II.

This beloved film won five Oscars in its day. An added feature this evening will be a family sing-along featuring the well-known tunes from the show.

Admission and popcorn are free.

New Art Exhibits

York Art Association artist Heather Henriksen just mounted a wonderful exhibition of her Maine-themed photographs in the Kennebunk Room. Viewers will recognize many of her subjects: a York Beach street scene, lobster boats and buoys, roadside lupine, the Nubble lighthouse and more.

Coming later this month is an exhibit of the watercolors of South Berwick artist Dewitt Hardy.

Ongoing and Coming Events

Story hours continue through the end of August on Fridays at 10:30 a.m. in the Children's Room. These stories are planned for pre-schoolers, ages 3 to 5, and conclude with a simple craft activity. The last Summer Story Time will be on Aug. 25. Stories will resume at 10:30 a.m. on Thursdays and Fridays beginning on Sept. 28 and 29.

Miss Kate's infant lap-sits will begin the same week on Wednesday, Sept. 27, at 10:30 a.m.

Animal-themed films are shown in the Community Room each Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. through the end of August. Remaining in the series are Aug. 15, "Beethoven," and

Aug. 22, "Lady and the Tramp."

On Thursday, Aug. 10, at 10:30 a.m., the third and final presentation in this year's Family Fun Series features "Double Vision."

On Sunday, Aug. 13 at 6 p.m., the Summer Film Festival continues with family favorite "The Sound of Music."

Here's some "Food for Thought" - for a second year in a row, on Thursday, Aug. 17, dine at a local restaurant and help the library at the same time! Local eateries will be helping the library raise funds by donating a portion of the day's "take" to the library.

We thank these local businesses in advance for their support. What a difference it makes.

The Summer Film Festival concludes on Sunday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m. with a showing of the romantic comedy "Pat and Mike." The film, starring Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy, won an Oscar in 1953 for Writer's Best Story/Film/Play.

Admission and popcorn are free, with donations accepted.
