YORK - In the final game of the season, the York 9-10 All Stars gave Falmouth a run for the championship, with the final score Falmouth 4 and York 3 in seven innings.
Last week, the All Stars played three games, two against Falmouth and one against Hall-Dale, including the championship game on Aug. 6.
First, on Thursday, Aug. 3, Falmouth scored three times in the first inning and three times in the third en route to a 6-4 victory over York.
The York defense was led by a solid pitching performance from Adam Bailey, who struck out eight batters and allowed only five hits over six innings.
York scored two runs in the bottom of the first on RBI singles by Bailey, scoring Michael Gallagher, and Anthony Sciaudone, scoring Andrew LaMonica, who both reached base via base on balls. York scored single runs in the fifth on a bases loaded walk by Matt Pratt and in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Aaron Todd.
On Saturday, Aug. 5, the York offense behind Ben Lawlor's two RBI triples beat Hall-Dale 5-0.
Offensively for York, Derek Neal (double), Gallagher (single), LaMonica (single), Sciaudone, Ross Hogan and Pratt also had hits for York.
Sciaudone went five strong innings, giving up only one hit and striking out seven batters to get the win and Todd came on in the sixth to strike out three batters in relief.
In the State Championship on Sunday, Aug. 6, a tough game, Falmouth overcame a 3-1 deficit in the sixth inning to tie the score and then win the game on a walk-off solo homerun in the seventh to send York to a defeat in the final game of the 9/10-year-old state tournament.
Bailey pitched six strong innings for York. LaMonica faced one batter in the seventh.
The York offense scored all its runs in the first inning when LaMonica scored on a Todd single and Todd and Sciaudone (single) scored on a double by Neal to right field. Sciaudone led the way with two hits and Lawlor also had a hit for York.
Defensively, LaMonica made a game-saving catch with a runner on in the bottom of the sixth off a well-hit ball to right center field.
Even though Falmouth won the state tournament, York had nothing to be ashamed of after posting nine wins combined in the district and state tournament.
Finishing second in the state and winning the district is certainly a worthy accomplishment for the York team and speaks highly of the York Little League program.
