Food, book groups, art and more

By York Public Library Assistant Director Sudie Blanchard

YORK VILLAGE - Eat out on Thursday, Aug. 17, and do more than satisfy your appetite.

Many local restaurants are participating in "Food for Thought," a fundraising benefit for the York Public Library. Patrons who eat at one of the participating restaurants will actually be donating to the Library because each restaurant has pledged to give at least 10% of its revenues earned on Aug. 17. Some restaurants have opted to donate more.

So, if you are looking for a place to eat - be it breakfast, lunch, dinner or dessert - on Aug. 17, check the list below to see if your favorite restaurant or café is listed. Then go for a meal that day and tell them you are there to support "Food for Thought" and the York Public Library.

Also consider buying a gift certificate for lunch or dinner. Be sure to tell the establishment why you are purchasing it on Aug. 17. Gift certificates make wonderful inserts for birthday cards or a "thank you" for someone special. For more information, call the York Library at 363-2818. Bon appétit!

Here's the list of participating restaurants:

York: 421 Bakery and Cafe, Coppertop Bistro, Food & Co., Greenleaves Chinese Restaurant, Stolen Menu Cafe, Stonewall Kitchen Cafe, The Village Scoop, Tre Ragazze Café. Cape Neddick: Flo's, Lucia's Kitchen, Talpey's Tavern. York Beach: Inn on the Blues, Panda and Sakura, Wicked Good Ice Cream. York Harbor: Chapman Cottage, Dockside Restaurant, Lobster Cove Restaurant, York Harbor Inn. Kennebunk: On the Marsh

New Art Exhibits

York Art Association artist Heather Henriksen just mounted a wonderful exhibition of her Maine-themed photographs in the Kennebunk Room. Viewers will recognize many of her subjects: a York Beach street scene, lobster boats and buoys, roadside lupine, the Nubble lighthouse, and more.

Coming later this month is an exhibit of the watercolors of South Berwick artist Dewitt Hardy.

Summer Reading Program Ends Soon

The Summer Reading Program ends with a giant party at the Seacoast Trolley Museum on Saturday, Aug. 19, sponsored by the Southern Maine Library District.

Coming Events

On Thursday, Aug. 17, at 10 a.m. there will be a special reading of "Vacation with Nana." Each year, children of the LaMonica and Layton families write a book with their grandmother, Deanna Block, and sell copies. This year's proceeds will be donated to Dream Factory of Maine, supporting critically ill children. Anthony LaMonica and Lauren Layton will read from the book. Come support young authors.

The Summer Film Festival concludes on Sunday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m. with a showing of the romantic comedy "Pat and Mike." The film, starring Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy, won an Oscar in 1953 for Writer's Best Story/Film/Play. Admission and popcorn are free, with donations accepted.

On Thursday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m., Professor Michael Lee will facilitate the first session in the "Let's Talk About It" series on Jewish literature.
