Ogunquit, Wells officials discussing school funding, fireworks and more
By C. Ayn Douglass
OGUNQUIT - The Ogunquit Board of Selectmen met Monday afternoon, Aug. 14, in executive session to plan a strategy to present to the town of Wells concerning the funding formula assigned by the state for incorporating Ogunquit students into Wells schools.Wells and Ogunquit officials were also scheduled to meet in a joint session Tuesday night at 6 p.m., but that meeting was not complete as of press time.
Ogunquit Town Manager Phil Clark said Monday it was Ogunquit's plan to prioritize talks on the school funding formula, although resolution seemed unlikely.
"It's been 25 years," he said. "Why would we expect resolution at this meeting?"
In addition to the school issue, officials from Wells and Ogunquit were expected to discuss plans for combining resources for future Fourth of July fireworks displays and to talk about Route 1 traffic conditions at the Tuesday night meeting.
Meanwhile, talks have continued with the York School Department on whether a plan can be agreed upon for Ogunquit's 44 students to attend York schools. Another meeting on that subject is scheduled for October.
See next week's edition of The Independent for full reports on this week's Wells-Ogunquit meeting.
