The Greater York Region Chamber of Commerce and Eliot Antique Tractor and Engine Association's first-ever Celebrate Maine Festival was a great time for people of all ages. The two-day event featured everything from face painting of barnyard animals to bands, crafts, food, Cow Patty Bingo, an antique car show, a barrel train ride and more. The town continues to look for ways to protect its growth cap in the face of state legislation that would require York and other towns to increase the number of residential building permits allowed each year. Months before hurricane season began this summer, and even before the Mother's Day storm caused flooding throughout town, local officials began preparing for what weather experts have projected may be a severe hurricane season for the Atlantic. As promised this spring, Oscar Plotkin returned to town last week to gather more public input on future plans for the York's Wild Kingdom property, this time hosting a forum at the York Harbor Inn. The Board of Selectmen has decided to create a building committee to oversee the use of the recently purchased Coventry Hall land for municipal facilities. The results are in, and just like a parent beaming over that first shining report card, York School Department officials have much to be happy about with the local performance in the redesigned Maine Educational Assessment A seal that made a special appearance at Harbor Beach on Aug. 5 is well on its way to recovery, according to rescue personnel. Ron Nowell will be leading the second of two Historic District Commission walks, this one to the Knight's Marsh area, starting at 1 p.m. this Saturday, Aug. 19. The officers and crew of the USS Philadelphia will be the guests of honor at a picnic at the York Town Hall this Thursday, Aug. 17, at 3 p.m. Members of the public will have a chance to have their say on the possible creation of a Tax Incremental Financing (TIF) District during a hearing scheduled for the Aug. 28 Board of Selectmen meeting. A longtime York School Department employee who was placed on leave due to a pending domestic violence court case last year has been reinstated to his job. The Old York Historical Society is now just $660,000 short of its goal, which will allow it to receive a $500,000 matching grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities for a total of $2.8 million to help preserve the past for the future. It's a place where Old York Historical Society staff and volunteers have helped hundreds of people to discover their roots each year. Over the past two months, five local youngsters have been hard at work with Old York Historical Society Elizabeth Perkins Fellow Emily Nichols creating their own exhibit from York's past. Ice cream trucks will not be returning to town. The concentration on dealing with point source pollution has resulted in cleaner water, generally. Completing a preliminary application review is proving to be an uphill battle for developers of the proposed Highland Farm Phase 2 subdivision as abutters and conservation groups continue to oppose the plan and members of the Planning Board seek answers to their questions. With only a few weeks remaining in the official swim season, the town's beaches remain open and classified as healthy, despite a few occasional spikes in bacteria counts.

The York Police Department has received one report from a local resident of a vehicle shooting in the wake of television reports of windows being shot out of vehicles on roadways throughout parts of York County.
