York police warn of sweepstakes scam

YORK - The York Police Department is issuing a warning about letters being sent involving a sweepstakes scam.

York residents have already received letters from a group calling themselves G & F Financial Services and BBBY Management Corp.

The letters are being sent from Canada and the businesses claim to be out of New York and New Jersey.

People should be aware of indicators of scams including receiving notification of a prize when you haven't entered a contest; letters sent with no return address, and postmarks that do not match the letterhead address.

Also beware of money orders sent to you for you to cash. Do not cash these checks, as your account will have to cover the amount of the invalid check.

Residents should also beware of requests to call a phone number and pay a fee for insurance and delivery in order to claim your prize.

People should be very cautious about giving out any personal information over the phone. Any checks sent to you unsolicited should be carefully researched before any action is taken.
