Library to host Jewish literature series

YORK VILLAGE - "Let's Talk About It: Jewish Literature - Identity and Imagination," a five-part reading and discussion series, will begin Sept. 14 at 7 pm at the York Public Library.

The first program will explore the book "Lost in Translation" by Eva Hoffman. Registration is required and limited to 25 people.

All books will be provided free of charge to participants.

Sponsored by the York Public Library in association with the York Diversity Forum and York Adult and Community Education, the series explores Jewish literature and culture through scholar-led discussions of contemporary and classic books on a common theme.

The theme of the York series is "Between Two Worlds: Stories of Estrangement and Homecoming." This free series is open to all adults in the community and is led by Michael Lee, Ph.D., associate director of the Center for Teaching Excellence at the University of New Hampshire.

Additional books to be discussed over a period of four months are "Mr. Sammler's Plane" by Saul Bellow on Oct. 5, "Out of Egypt" by Andre Acimen on Oct. 26, "The Centaur in the Garden" by Moacyr Scliar on Nov. 16, and "Kaaterskill Falls" by Allegra Goodman on Dec. 7.

The York Public Library is one of over 60 libraries nationwide receiving grants this year to host this program developed by Nextbook and the American Library Association. Additional support is being provided by the Herman Forbes Charitable Trust.

"We are delighted to have been chosen to host this unique series that will allow community members a chance to discuss and get a better understanding of Jewish life and Jewish literature," said Project Coordinator Milton Davis.
