Wanted: nominations for York's 2006 Citizen of the Year
YORK - While December's Festival of Lights frozen fun and holiday spirit may seem far away, the search for one very special person to be a part of that event is now underway.Once again the Festival of Lights Committee is seeking community's help in selecting York's Citizen of the Year.
Nominees are needed for the annual award, which is sponsored by the Greater York Region Chamber of Commerce.
Festival of Lights Committee members are asking members of the community to nominate someone they know who has served the town of York either by giving time as a volunteer to such organizations as local churches, schools or service clubs, or through any selfless act that has helped to make York a better place to live.
"Oftentimes it is the unsung hero who makes the biggest impact on a community," the committee noted in its announcement of the search. "The Chamber feels it is important to recognize and thank the people whose individual efforts have had a positive impact on the community as a whole."
Would you like to be a part of the process?
Help say "thank you" to a deserving individual by submitting a letter of nomination by Oct. 1 to: Citizen of the Year, c/o Greater York Chamber, 1 Stonewall Lane, York, ME 03909 or by dropping your nominations off at the Old York Historical Society's administration building at 207 York Street.
Nomination forms are available at these locations.
The Festival of Lights Committee, which is made up of representatives from Old York Historical Society, The York Parks and Recreation Department, Town Hall, the York Police Department and York Hospital, as well as community members, reviews all nomination forms and submits five finalists to the Greater York Region Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.
The board then selects the Citizen of the Year from that group of finalists.
The Citizen of the Year Award will be announced at the chamber's annual membership dinner in November and the person chosen for the award will be an honorary guest at the dinner and will also serve as the grand marshal of the Festival of Lights Parade on Dec. 2.
Past award winners have included Bill and Phoebe Foster, Verna Rundlett, Rosie Lent, Bainbridge Parsons, Pat Bacon, Harold Radochia, Leo and Diane Flynn, Rita Turner, Mike Lee, Alan Junkins, Gordon and Donna Lewis, Rick Mace and Virginia Parsons.
