Beaches remain open after shark scare
YORK BEACH - A passing fisherman reported seeing what appeared to be a shark in the waters off Long Sands Beach late last week, prompting local officials to keep a close watch on the beaches.However, no beach closure was necessitated over the weekend, Town Manager Rob Yandow confirmed on Sunday.
No additional sightings were reported, although life guards were asked to keep a close eye on the waters after the initial report came in on Friday.
Just days earlier, a mako shark was found dead at Wells Beach, according to the Associated Press, and that beach was closed to swimmers as additional shark sightings were reported by beachgoers.
As of Monday, police had no additional information on shark sightings in York.
