The Art of Icon Painting, a three-day workshop, is being offered by Marina Nazarova Forbes at York's D'Alessandro Fine Art Gallery on Sept. 11, 13 and 15 from 9 a.m. until noon. The cost for this hands-on workshop is $175 plus materials. The workshop will focus on the creation of Russian icons and includes a demonstration of traditional materials and methods. The Figure in American Painting And Drawing at the Ogunquit Museum of American Art through Oct. 31. This exhibition will examine the diverse styles and perspectives that have appeared in American figurative painting and drawing during the past two decades. Heartwood College of Art presents "Speak to the Color" Exhibition from Aug. 30 through Oct. 6 with an opening reception on Aug. 30 at 4:30 p.m. Faculty members whose work will be represented in "Speak to the Color" include Stuart Nudelman, Carl Schmalz, Anne Stanley, Stuart Scott Tubby, and Wade Zahares and visitors to the show will view works in acrylic, watercolor, photography, ceramics, jewelry, glass and other media. "Menopause the Musical," at the Ogunquit Playhouse, Route 1, Ogunquit. Aug. 28 through Sept. 17. Raucous celebration of women who are on the brink of, in the middle of, or have survived "The Change." The joyful musical parody of 25 re-lyricized classic baby boomer hits, features such chart-toppers as I Heard It Thru the Grapevine; You No Longer See 39, and the disco favorite Stayin' Awake! Stayin' Awake! Men and women of all ages will be dancing in the aisles. The Portland Conservatory of Music's Fall Registration Open Houses are set for Aug. 26 and Sept. 1. People of all ages are invited to tour the teaching studios, listen to live music and find out more about autumn offerings, including Royal American Conservatory of Music pedagogy, children's music programs, jazz, rock, cello, vocal, strings, Suzuki study, music theory and more. The Prints of Peggy Bacon at the Ogunquit Museum of American Art through Oct. 31. Margaret Frances (Peggy) Bacon (1895-1987) received The Gold Medal for Graphic Art from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. Bacon's works are represented in numerous public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the National Portrait Gallery, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the OMAA. "Real, Reproduction or Outright Fake" at the Old York Historical Society through Oct. 8. Not everything is what it appears to be, especially in the world of antiques and museum collections. What does a museum curator or collector look for to determine if a piece is real, reproduction or fake? A season-long exhibit in the Long Parlor Gallery of Old York's Emerson-Wilcox House will show examples of furniture, glass, ceramics, textiles and other decorative arts that will both test and inform the visitor about what to look for to determine authenticity and value. Seacoast Community Chorus is accepting new members. Rehearsals begin Sept. 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the First Parish Church's Fellowship Hall. Conducted by Wendell Purrington, this non-auditioned, mixed-voice chorus attracts singers from Seacoast N.H. and Maine. The January 2007 concert will feature music by Handel and Vaughn Williams. CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS

The American Holistic Nurses Association will host its fall kickoff meeting will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 5, from 7 to 9 p.m. at The Candleshop Inn in York Beach. The meetings are open to all who share an interest in learning how to care for themselves and others. AHNA was founded in 1990 and is geared toward helping nurses learn to heal themselves, so that they may better serve their patients. Networking meetings take place on the first Tuesday of each month. The Gateway Farmer's Market, held in the parking lot at the Greater York Region Chamber of Commerce Visitor's Center on Route One in York, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Oct. 7. Local farmers and specialty food producers will sell their fresh fruit, vegetables, pies, breads and more.

Home Schooling Club meets Fridays in August at York Harbor Beach for fun in the sun. Bring your own beach supplies and food, come early because parking is limited to permits only in the lower lot and two hours on the street. September events, also on Fridays beginning Sept. 8, include a guided tour of Mount Agamenticus, a visit to the York Public Library for Let's Play Games, a trip to the York Beach Playground for outside fun and a visit at the Center for Wildlife. Foot-care Tips for Diabetic Feet, offered by SMMC Visiting Nurses, is an informative talk on taking care of your feet as a diabetic and how diabetic shoes can help. Those attending will learn how this chronic disease affects the feet and gain some useful tips for proper foot care. Laurie Doran, a certified shoe fitter, will demonstrate how custom-molded insoles are made and explain the health benefits of properly fitted diabetic shoes. In addition to a chance to see many different styles of diabetic shoes, participants will receive a resource list. Many diabetics are not aware that health insurance plans and Medicare may annually cover the cost of one pair of diabetic shoes, up to four shoe inserts and a professional foot exam. The talk is scheduled for Sept. 20 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the Center for Seniors-Lower Village in Kennebunk and for Sept. 25 from 7 to 8 p.m. at SMMC Visiting Nurses Office in Kennebunk. York Hospital's Heart Health Institute offers a long-term weight management program that concentrates on permanent lifestyle changes instead of "dieting". Meeting for 10 weeks from 6-7:30 p.m., beginning Sept. 14, the cost is $129. Weekly classes include a supervised exercise session at the fitness center focusing on individual nutrition needs, stress management and fitness requirements. Old York Garden Club Standard Flower Show presents a standard flower show, "A Tribute to Maine Authors," at the York Public Library on Sept. 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 16 from 10 a.m. to noon. There are three divisions; the first based on design, the second on horticulture and the third a special exhibits category. All entries will be juried. The York Hospital Breast Cancer Survivor Group, which meets the third Monday of the month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Ellis Conference Room at York Hospital, welcomes new members. Women who attend survivor groups cope better, heal more quickly and live longer. New members, whether or not their treatment was at York Hospital, are invited to come to the meetings and be with women who share their story. Friends are welcome too. During these meetings the members share information, coping tips and strategies, explore complimentary therapies, hear guest speakers, support each other, experience sisterhood, plan the Annual Walk for Hope and celebrate living.
