The York Beach Cinema says farewell with a special final show on Sept. 2
YORK BEACH - The house will go dark on Saturday, Sept. 2, as the 78-year-old York Beach Cinema closes its doors for the last time.To commemorate the evening, admission to the theatre will be lowered to $3 per person for the final show at 8 p.m.
The last movie shown at the cinema will be "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest."
Troy Williams, manager of the York Beach Cinema, hopes to fill the house to its capacity of 300 seats for this final show, marking the end of an era at the beach.
"Attendance has been up this summer," he said, "as people come to reminisce about the long history of this seasonal theatre and the impact it had on their lives."
According to the Greater York Region Chamber of Commerce, many of those who "remember when" in town have been sharing their fond recollections of the cinema's past.
York native Dawn Fernald, for example, remembered watching the Molly Ringwald classic "Sixteen Candles" there on her 16th birthday.
Maureen Regan, owner of Seaside Vacation Rentals, remembers when the movie "Bed & Breakfast" was filmed in York and many local people were cast as extras. A special viewing was held at the York Beach Cinema when the film was released.
And with 78 years of movie seasons, many classics from the near and distant past have been shown at the York Beach Cinema - including "Gone With the Wind," "E.T." and "High Noon."
Tickets for the final show on Sept. 2 will be available at 7 p.m. that evening at the cinema's box office.
The theatre will also be open all this week for regular showings at 8 p.m. Tickets for the shows leading up to the final night are $7 for adults and $5 for seniors and children under the age of 12.
