Ogunquit Performing Arts announces the schedule for Capriccio 2006

OGUNQUIT - Capriccio 2006 will take place from Sept. 4 through Sept. 17.

Capriccio 2006 is Ogunquit's 16th annual town-wide festival of the arts.

Offering a variety of events of long standing plus some exciting new events, this year's Capriccio opens with Poets in Person and includes a Tango demonstration and dancing, book readings by eminent authors and scholars, art exhibitions and workshops, movies about the arts, classic movies and a performance of "Menopause: The Musical" at the Ogunquit Playhouse.

Additionally, there will be the popular Festival of Kites on Ogunquit Beach with free kites distributed to youth and many other activities as listed below.

Throughout the two-week event, there will be offerings at the Barn Gallery, Ogunquit Museum of American Art, Ogunquit Heritage Museum, Ogunquit Playhouse and Leavitt Fine Arts Theatre.

Special Events include the "Almost Labor Day Auction at the Ogunquit Museum of American Art" on Sept. 2, "Poets in Person" at the Barn Gallery on Sept. 4, a harpsichord recital by Peter Sykes at OMAA on Sept. 5, "The Eloquent Eye" at the Barn Gallery on Sept. 6, a discussion and demonstration on printmaking at the Barn Gallery on Sept. 7 and a sing-a-Long with light lunch at the Wells/Ogunquit Senior Center on Sept. 8.

On Saturday, Sept. 9, events include the Kite Festival at Ogunquit Beach at 10 a.m., Nature Crafts Festival at Laudholm Farm from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Craft Fair at Wells Elementary School from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and a reception for a new exhibition at the Barn Gallery from 5 to 8 p.m.

The Nature Crafts Festival continues at Laudholm Farm on Sept. 10, along with the "Tango Night" demonstration and dance lessons at the Barn Gallery at 7 p.m.

On Monday, Sept. 11, there will be tours and a memorial organ concert at St. Peter's Church from 9 a.m. to noon, and an illustrated talk entitled "To Picture a Poet: Longfellow the American Visual Imagination," by Charles Calhoun at the Barn Gallery at 7 p.m.

More gallery talks and classic films are planned for the remainder of the week, with the final weekend of Capriccio to include an antique show and sale at the Dunaway Center from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 16 and 17, and an art auction for the Great Works Regional Land Trust at Jonathan's at 6 p.m., on Saturday, Sept. 16.

The final event of Capriccio 2006 will take place on Sunday, Sept. 17, at 3 p.m. at the Ogunquit Playhouse with the ballet "The Red Shoes," newly choreographed by Andrei Bossov.

Bossov is well known in Ogunquit for his choreography of "Bolero," "Pictures at an Exhibition" and "Carmina Burana," all performed by the Portland Ballet on the stage of the Ogunquit Playhouse.
