Ogunquit Heritage Museum announces new season, new exhibits

OGUNQUIT - The fifth season of the Ogunquit Heritage Museum at the Captain James Winn House is off to an exciting start.

The Friends of the Winn House sponsored an open house on June 25 to showcase the newest exhibits as well as the progress made in the ell addition.

The art room has a collaboration of exhibits of "Artists of Ogunquit." The paintings and reproductions are arranged according to subject matter, giving a look at the different techniques used by artists and their interpretations of various subjects matter; beaches, rocks and surf as well as people.

Included in the exhibit are several pieces of sculpture by Robert Laurent, loaned to the museum by his grandson, Hal. Many Ogunquit residents have loaned art for this exhibit, including the Paul Masons, the Stuart Nudelmans, Marena Bragg, the Peter Woodburys, and Bob Perkins.

Also gracing this exhibit is a recent painting of the Marginal Way by Norman West, a gift to the museum.

The parlor highlights the new Sea Captain's room. New artifacts have been purchased as well as loaned to the museum, including several charts, maps, a sea chest and a binnacle.

Our "Do You Remember" room exhibits include items from the Ogunquit Baptist Church, which celebrated its 175th anniversary last year. Photographs of scenes from Ogunquit's past are displayed, as well as a board devoted to the Ogunquit Playhouse, soon to celebrate its 75th year.

The small borning room contains various renditions of the foot bridge in the cove, covering several decades.

Our greatest excitement is the nearing completion of the ell, a replica of the ell that was originally attached to the Winn House. The Littlefield Library, a genealogical collection given to the museum by the late Charles Littlefield Seaman, has been moved to the ell. Also in the ell, we will replicate a fisherman's shack and hopefully fulfill the dream of building a genuine copy of an Ogunquit Dory.

The museum is situated on the serene Dorothea Jacobs Grant Common on Obeds Lane in Ogunquit.

The museum is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. It will remain open until Sept. 30.
