Walk teams needed for 2006 "Strut Your Mutt" fundraiser

YORK - If you enjoy a nice walk on the beach with your dog, and a few hundred other people and dogs, and want to help provide needed medical treatment for sick or injured homeless animals, then "Strut Your Mutt" needs you!

The Animal Welfare Society (AWS) will hold its 12th Annual Morris Insurance Strut Your Mutt walk on Sunday, Sept. 10, at Mothers Beach in Kennebunk.

All proceeds from this event will benefit the Sadie Fund, which provides needed medical treatments for the thousands of homeless animals the shelter houses each year.

AWS is encouraging all you born pack leaders to form teams now to participate in this year's event. Walk teams of three to five people each can represent any business, athletic, political or social organization.

The team that raises the most money in pledges will win a "Night at the Movies" at Smitty's Cinema, plus limousine rides.

"We're hoping that animal-lovers will get together to form walk teams and issue challenges to other groups to start some friendly competition to benefit a great cause," said AWS Development Director Brian Winslow. "Gathering pledges and walking as part of a team can make this event, which is, after all, a walk on the beach with your favorite canine, even more fun."

Teams that register for the walk before Sept. 8 pay a lower registration fee of $45, while teams that register onsite before the walk on Sept. 10, will be charged a $75 registration fee.

Registration and activities start at 10:00 a.m., hosted by our Honorary Strut Co-Chair Kim Block of WGME Channel 13, and the walk begins at 11 a.m. The walk is a two-mile loop and includes water stations for human and canine participants. The winning team will be announced in the closing ceremony at noon.

In previous years, Strut Your Mutt has attracted hundreds of animal lovers and canines and has been the Animal Welfare Society's single largest annual fundraising event. This year's event will also include contests, games, prizes, AKC Canine Good Citizen and obedience course information, raffles, photo opportunities and an "AWS Alumni Reunion" for the dogs that were housed here at the shelter and who have found loving families in the community.
