The ordinance to establish a workforce housing program in town is headed for a final public hearing next month, but its future is far from certain. Jeff Patten will turn 49 next month. The Board of Selectmen took no formal action on the creation of a tax incremental financing (TIF) district in York Beach following a public hearing on the proposal Monday night. Reports to town officials of possible shark sightings resulted in the closure of the town's beaches last Wednesday, Aug. 23. Weekend traffic on Interstate 95 came to a standstill on Sunday, Aug. 27, as what officials have described as a horrific two-car crash injured four motorists. Move over Milan. With the start of the new school year now less than a week away, the shuffle of faculty to fill positions that recently opened up is complete, with one new teacher joining the ranks to fill the fifth-grade team at York Middle School. Eleven people braved high heat and intense humidity on Saturday, Aug. 19, to join York native historian Ron Nowell on the second of two walks he organized with the Historic District Commission to call attention to the neglected history of the town's Agamenticus region. The Board of Selectmen has approved the establishment of a Municipal Building Committee to gather information, present a proposal and oversee plans for the recently purchased Coventry Hall land and other town projects. Celebrate York Hospital's 100th Anniversary with the Twin-State Cruisers' Car Club Antique Car Show and Cruise to York Village.

York Police Department Animal Control officers are looking for three cats that were allegedly abandoned by a local woman more than a week ago. For the second straight week, items were taken from vehicles belonging to employees at York's Wild Kingdom while they were parked in the employee parking lot. In an effort to get drunk drivers off the roadways, the York Police Department will be adding extra officers over the Labor Day holiday. Under a cloudy sky, firefighters from across New England joined the York Fire Department for its 90th Annual Firemen's Field Day Parade and Muster on Aug. 19.

Planning Department Monthly Report: By Town Planner Steve Burns Hospice of York is looking for men and women to become Hospice volunteers. The York Police Department is issuing a warning about letters being sent involving a sweepstakes scam. The Old York Historical Society is now just $660,000 short of its goal, which will allow it to receive a $500,000 matching grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities for a total of $2.8 million to help preserve the past for the future.
