New Building Committee will oversee town projects
By Larry Favinger
YORK - The Board of Selectmen has approved the establishment of a Municipal Building Committee to gather information, present a proposal and oversee plans for the recently purchased Coventry Hall land and other town projects.By unanimous vote by the selectmen on Monday night, Aug. 28, at the York Public Library, the five member committee was created. The committee will include two selectmen, two members of the general public and one member from the School Committee.
The committee's composition is generally based on the model of the School Building Committee, which handled the renovation and expansion of the York Middle School some years ago.
Dwight Bardwell, vice chairman of the Board of Selectmen and former member and chairman of the School Committee, and Town Manager Robert Yandow will put together a charge for the new committee that will include a timeline for presenting a proposal to the selectmen.
The hope is that something can be finalized by March of next year.
In other action, the selectmen accepted a bid of $9,000 from the Ogunquit Fire Department for a 1980 fire truck being disposed of by the York Beach Fire Department.
York Beach Chief Dave Bridges said this was an opportunity not only to sell the truck but to say "thank you" for all the work and help given to the town by the Ogunquit Fire Department.
"They've supported York for over 40 years," Bridges said of the mutual aid service of Ogunquit. "We can help them out and say thank you at the same time."
The selectmen's vote to do so was unanimous.
The board also approved the award of the town's road salt contract to Morton Salt Company. The bid was $42.50 a ton, an increase of only 50 cents over last year.
Also at the meeting, the board approved standard construction agreements with the Maine Department of Transportation in regard to the Passaconaway and Ice Pond bridges. The contracts allow the passage of overweight vehicles needed in the construction process. Public Works Director Bill Bray recommended the contract be signed.
In other action, the board:
- Approved a $1,000 contribution to the Seacoast Shipyard Association.
- Accepted with regret the resignation of Ron Nowell from the Historic District Commission.
- Approved license renewal applications to Brady and Louise Leah for Cat 'n Nine Tails, Donna Lewis TCF for Clay Hill Farm, Hannaford Brothers, Patrick Rocheleau for the Ledges Golf Course, Sentry Hill at York Harbor and Patrick J. Cragin for the Union Bluff Hotel.
