YORK - Instructor Marina Nazarova Forbes will offer a three-day workshop entitled "The Art of Icon Painting" at D'Alessandro Fine Art Gallery.The workshops will be held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, Sept. 11, 13 and 15, from 9 a.m. until noon. The cost is $175, plus materials.
This hands-on workshop will focus on the creation of Russian icons and includes a demonstration of traditional materials and methods.
Students will create icons using a combination of traditional and contemporary materials and techniques. In the process, they will learn about board and painting surface preparation, gesso application, image rendering, pigments, brush stroke techniques, detailing, highlighting, gilding, Old Slavonic lettering and varnishing.
Emphasis is on the unique character and spirituality of the icon and its place in Russian culture and history. The primary goals are to develop a clear understanding of the process of traditional Russian icon making and to produce finished pieces of traditional Russian art.
