While the official first day of fall may still be weeks away, those in the know around town would say the autumn season began on Tuesday, Sept. 5, as the majority of local students in grades K through 9 headed off to school. As parents and children cruise through their back-to-school lists, the state director of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention is urging parents to remember to complete one other important task: checking to see that their children's immunization records are up to date. The Maine School of Science and Mathematics (MSSM), a member of the National Consortium for Specialized Secondary Schools of Mathematics, Science and Technology and Maine's only public residential magnet chartered school, is hosting a visiting day for current high school freshmen and sophomores on Sept. 30.
