Art, films and more at the library

By Assistant Director Sudie Blanchard

YORK VILLAGE - Gather by the fireplace on Thursday, Sept. 7, for our next Artist Talk.

Featured is South Berwick artist Dewitt Hardy, whose work is on display at the library through the end of September.

Mr. Hardy is nationally known for his watercolors, drawings and set designs. He has had 16 one-man shows in New York City and has pieces in over 35 museum collections including the Farnsworth, Portland Museum of Art, the British Museum, the Smithsonian and the Library of Congress.

An art history major at Syracuse University, DeWitt founded the well-known North Berwick figure-drawing group. He is featured in "American Realism," published by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Summer Film Festival's Final Film

Summer is nearly over, and so is the Summer Film Festival. Enjoy one last film, the romantic comedy "Pat and Mike," starring Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy, on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m.

A New York Times reviewer had this to say about this Oscar winning film back in 1952: "...it is a likable fable about a highly coordinated dame who moves in upon and takes over a positive, authoritative guy, with slight overtones of honor triumphing over shadiness and greed. And it is smoothly directed by George Cukor and slyly, amusingly played by the whole cast, especially by its duo of easy, adroit, experienced stars."

Admission and popcorn are free, but donations are always welcomed.

Ongoing Art Exhibits

York Art Association artist Alice B. Hogan has just mounted a wonderful exhibition of her watercolors in the Kennebunk Room. Subjects of her work include Maine seascapes, landscapes of familiar Maine scenes - as well as a couple from the Southwest - and people.

Ms. Hogan has been a part-time resident of York since the late '50s. She spends the rest of the year in Maryland.

The watercolors of South Berwick artist Dewitt Hardy continue to be on display at the library through the month of September.
