SURFIN' SAFARI

Surfers from under the age of 10 to over 65 gathered at Long Sands Beach on Labor Day for the Eastern Surfing Association's Northern New England Surf Contest. Pictured are contestants from the Legends, Grand Masters and Menuhune (little people) categories. The local contest served as the steppingstone to the Eastern Championships, coming up this fall on Cape Hatteras. The event brought over 50 competitors along with their families and friends for a great day of surfing on Long Sands. The surfing gods cooperated with the best swell of the summer and warm water conditions throughout the holiday weekend. Football

Last Saturday, Sept. 2, the loyal York fans traveled to Poland to enjoy the weather and the opening football game of the season.

Soccer

The York Girls Soccer team had never won here since, well, never. York Boys Soccer Coach Jeff Smith's biggest worry heading into last Friday's home game versus Gray-New Gloucester was that his team would be looking past the visitors and ahead to perennial league heavyweights Yarmouth and Falmouth, both up on the schedule this week.

Cross Country

The York Cross Country teams opened the season in fine form this past Saturday, Sept. 2, in Ellsworth.
