While the official first day of fall may still be weeks away, those in the know around town would say the autumn season began on Tuesday, Sept. 5, as the majority of local students in grades K through 9 headed off to school. End of an era for York Beach When the York Beach Fire Department hosts the 43rd Annual Maine State Federation of Fire Fighters Convention next week, residents will have a rare chance to see the best fire fighting equipment Maine has to offer, and to meet those who serve. By Town Manager Rob Yandow Just a few months ago the Center for Wildlife began a fundraising effort to create a new raptor compound for its feathered residents who, due to significant injuries, will never wing their way to return to life in the wild. The Swim Center of Southern Maine has closed its membership offer for free swim lessons, but is continuing to accept members as plans move forward to locate a swimming complex on the town's Bog Road land. When the Planning Board meets next week, one of the first items of business it will discuss is a preliminary proposal from the Old York Historical Society to build a new educational center adjacent to Jefferds' Tavern. It started with a dream shared by two local residents. The International Women's Club of New England (IWCNE) exists in part to raise money for charities supportive of women and children. In response to the movement "Make Poverty History," St. George's Episcopal Church will celebrate a special U2charist next Sunday, featuring music from U2's catalog, including such favorites as "Where the Streets Have No Name," "Yahweh," "Love and Peace (or Else)," "Pride (In the Name of Love)" and "Gloria." Planning Department Monthly Report: By Town Planner Steve Burns The Maine School of Science and Mathematics (MSSM), a member of the National Consortium for Specialized Secondary Schools of Mathematics, Science and Technology and Maine's only public residential magnet chartered school, is hosting a visiting day for current high school freshmen and sophomores on Sept. 30. Sentry Hill will be celebrating National Assisted Living Week from Sept. 10 through 16.

In celebration of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Goodall Hospital and its Center for Women's Health are hosting a special Women's Health Screening Day on Wednesday, Oct. 4. Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men and Women, a nationally known non-profit organization, is looking for volunteers to assist victims of intimate partner violence.

The Old York Historical Society is now just $660,000 short of its goal, which will allow it to receive a $500,000 matching grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities for a total of $2.8 million to help preserve the past for the future.
