Meeting scheduled for pool plan, no new action on proposed skating rink

By Jennifer L. Saunders

YORK - The Swim Center of Southern Maine has closed its membership offer for free swim lessons, but is continuing to accept members as plans move forward to locate a swimming complex on the town's Bog Road land.

Voters approved requests for the Board of Selectmen to be authorized to negotiate with the Swim Center of Southern Maine for the pool facility and the MacLaughlin Management Group regarding an ice arena back at the polls in May.

Since that time, Swim Center of Southern Maine partners Ann Grinnell and Kathryn Strand have offered incentives in an effort to garner the members necessary to make their project a reality.

"We are still at the 40 number," Grinnell said in the days before the membership drive closed on Tuesday, Sept. 5. "After our deadline people can still join but will not get the offer of free lessons and all the other things we offered."

Grinnell confirmed the SCSM was scheduled to meet with representatives from the board of selectmen as part of ongoing discussions of the project. Grinnell and Strand were planning to contact the SCSM members today, Wednesday, Sept. 6, to schedule an informational meeting.

Information on the proposed pool complex is available at www.scsminc.com.

Meanwhile, town officials said there is nothing new to report on the preliminary proposal to locate an ice arena for hockey, figure skating and recreational skating on the same parcel of town land.

Both Town Manager Rob Yandow and Selectmen Chairman David Marshall confirmed no meetings have been scheduled at this time.
