SURF CITY

Hundreds of surfers of all ages from near and far, like the longboard veteran pictured here, converged on Long Sands Beach over the weekend to enjoy a huge swell and warm water conditions. The large surf also brought with it some unfortunate altercations (See our Editorial) that need to be dealt with before next summer's season begins.

Eight-year-old Kayla Baker, pictured here, was all smiles as she began to unpack her supplies for the first day of school in Nancy Cook's classroom at Coastal Ridge Elementary School. The academic year began on Tuesday, Sept. 5, for all students in grades K through 9 at the York Schools. Students in grades 10 through 12 at York High School are scheduled to return to classes today, Wednesday, Sept. 6. See story.

The York Beach Cinema was filled to standing-room-only capacity for its final show, "The Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," on Saturday, Sept. 2. The cinema is scheduled to be razed to make way for a new commercial building. See story.

While the official first day of fall may still be weeks away, those in the know around town would say the autumn season began on Tuesday, Sept. 5, as the majority of local students in grades K through 9 headed off to school. End of an era for York Beach When the York Beach Fire Department hosts the 43rd Annual Maine State Federation of Fire Fighters Convention next week, residents will have a rare chance to see the best fire fighting equipment Maine has to offer, and to meet those who serve. Ogunquit Museum of American Art Curator Michael Culver reports the second annual "Almost Labor Day" silent auction "really exceeded expectations, really achieved perfection" this year. Despite the Labor Day holiday weekend and driving winds that created whitecaps on the horizon as far as the eye could see, there was no shortage of labor for the Third Annual Ogunquit Beach Cleanup Day on Saturday, Sept. 2.
