YORK VILLAGE - The Old York Garden Club is hosting a standard flower show, "A Tribute to Maine Authors," at the York Public Library this Friday, Sept. 15, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 16, from 10 a.m. to noon. The show is open to the public and admission is free.
There are three divisions: the first based on design, the second on horticulture and the third a special exhibits category.
In the design division, Old York Garden Club members will compete in a variety of entries inspired by Maine Authors. The design classes include: "Still Life Design," taking its theme from Sarah Orne Jewett's The Tory Lover; "Traditional Mass Design," inspired by Neil Rolde's Unsettled Past, Unsettled Future: The Story of Maine Indians, and "Children's Favorite Stories," taking its inspiration from E.B. White's Stuart Little, in which competitors must make a traditional yet miniature floral arrangement.
There are seven class divisions in all, with four entries in each. First, second, third and honorable mention prizes will be awarded according to standards set by the National Garden Clubs, Inc., the Handbook for Flower Shows and The National Gardener.
In the horticultural division, community members along with Garden Club members are encouraged to submit specimens from their own gardens for judging. Entries for this division include vegetables, herbs, arboreal, perennials, annuals, fruits, container-grown plants and trained plants or topiaries.
The special exhibits categories include "Educational," "Youth Groups" and "Commercial."
Entries will be accepted today, Wednesday, Sept. 13, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the First Parish Church Fellowship Hall.
