Register now for York Art Association watercolor classes

YORK HARBOR - The York Art Association, celebrating its 50th year, is issuing a call for artists in watercolor to attend a two-day class in watercolor techniques at the YAA headquarters in York Harbor on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 13 and 14.

The instructor will be Jan Kilburn of Damariscotta, who spends most of her time painting the shores of Maine and New Hampshire, including her favorite Monhegan Island, where she spends the early part of every summer.

While she prefers painting outdoors, she also works in her studio and gallery in Damariscotta. Mid-coastal Maine has provided her with spectacular local subject matter from nearby Round Pond, New Harbor and Pemaquid, as well as Damariscotta itself.

Mostly self-taught, Kilburn has studied with Doris Rice and Judi Wagner; in recent years she has enjoyed conducting her own classes in watercolor at her studio and in Portsmouth, N.H. She is known as a highly effective yet sympathetic teacher.

In her classes, Kilburn begins in the morning by creating a demonstration watercolor, inviting and answering questions as she goes. Just before or after lunch, students will begin their own sketches or drawings, with continual assistance and instruction throughout the early afternoon.

Each day's class will end around 3:30 p.m.

Space in the YAA watercolor classes will necessarily be limited; the fee will be $40 per day per student.

All nascent aquarellists are heartily invited to come and learn. Since student numbers are limited, however, an early response is recommended.

To inquire about or register for the classes, please contact Leslie Doherty, YAA education chairperson, at 363-4392 or ldoherty@maine.rr.com.
