The Prints of Peggy Bacon at the Ogunquit Museum of American Art through Oct. 31. Margaret Frances (Peggy) Bacon (1895-1987) received The Gold Medal for Graphic Art from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. Bacon's works are represented in numerous public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the National Portrait Gallery, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the OMAA. "Real, Reproduction or Outright Fake" at the Old York Historical Society through Oct. 8. Not everything is what it appears to be, especially in the world of antiques and museum collections. What does a museum curator or collector look for to determine if a piece is real, reproduction or fake? A season-long exhibit in the Long Parlor Gallery of Old York's Emerson-Wilcox House will show examples of furniture, glass, ceramics, textiles and other decorative arts that will both test and inform the visitor about what to look for to determine authenticity and value. Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men and Women , a nationally known non-profit organization, is looking for volunteers to assist victims of intimate partner violence. Volunteers are needed to cover the organization's toll-free crisis line and ull training is offered. You may answer calls right from your home on weekdays, nights, weekends and/or holidays. The training is 40 hours and will consist of online and teleconferencing sessions. Volunteers must have access to a computer with an Internet connection. Kindergym , offered by York Parks and Recreation Department, will begin on Friday, Sept. 29. No pre-registration is required and the cost is $4 per child/$6 per family per visit. Kindergym will be held at our new location, Blueberry Hill, Route 1 York on Friday mornings from 9:30 - 10:15 am. This program is ongoing; come and join us any Friday. We're looking for children who are walking up to age 3 to bring their parents along to our Kindergym program! This is an opportunity for the parent and child to engage in activities geared toward coordination, mobility and large motor skill development. It will also be a great social atmosphere for children and parents alike. This will be a wonderful bonding time for you and your child.
L'il Tikes Soccer , offered by York Parks and Recreation, is currently accepting registrations. The cost is $30 for residents and $40 for non-residents and registrations will be accepted through Sept. 20. This program will be held at Coastal Ridge Elementary School on Saturday mornings. Game times will be rotating and will depend on the number of teams. This program is for children ages 3 and 4. This junior six-on-six league soccer will run for four weeks and will be offered as a basic introduction to the game of soccer. Games will be limited to 45 minutes and age appropriate skills and drills will be included; however, the main emphasis of this program will be to offer tons of fun for you and your child. Team uniforms, rosters and schedules will be issued at a coaches' meeting which will be held on Sept. 27 at 5 p.m. at the Grant House. Volunteer coaches are the backbone of our programs. The Piscataqua Garden Club, a member of the Garden Club of America, will present a Small Flower Show, "Reflections on the River" at the Urban Forestry Center, 45 Elwyn Road, Portsmouth, N.H., on Sept. 22 and 23. This judged show will have flower arranging, horticulture and photography exhibits. Conservation exhibits will interpret the Piscataqua River watershed, its resources and local conservation efforts. Children's exhibits will also be a feature of the show, including the Rainbow Garden planted each year by children working with the Portsmouth Kiwanis Club. Share the Night, Share the Light , a candlelight ceremony in conjunction with the 2006 American Cancer Society's Celebration on the Hill, will be held Wednesday, Sept. 20, at 7:15 p.m. at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford. Cancer survivors, their friends and family members, and other volunteers whose lives have been touched by cancer will show solidarity by lighting candles at hundreds of gathering places around the U.S., including local parks, fields and private homes. Celebration on the Hill is organized by the American Cancer Society's sister issue-advocacy organization, the Cancer Action NetworkSM.

Foot-care Tips for Diabetic Feet , offered by SMMC Visiting Nurses, is an informative talk on taking care of your feet as a diabetic and how diabetic shoes can help. Those attending will learn how this chronic disease affects the feet and gain some useful tips for proper foot care. Laurie Doran, a certified shoe fitter, will demonstrate how custom-molded insoles are made and explain the health benefits of properly fitted diabetic shoes. In addition to a chance to see many different styles of diabetic shoes, participants will receive a resource list. Many diabetics are not aware that health insurance plans and Medicare may annually cover the cost of one pair of diabetic shoes, up to four shoe inserts and a professional foot exam. The talk is scheduled for Sept. 20 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the Center for Seniors-Lower Village in Kennebunk and for Sept. 25 from 7 to 8 p.m. at SMMC Visiting Nurses Office in Kennebunk. Life Line Screening will be at St. George's Episcopal Church in York Harbor on Oct. 20 with appointments to begin at 9 a.m. A stroke, also known as a "brain attack," is ranked as the third leading killer in the world, and the second among women. Through preventive screenings like this, the risk of having a stroke can be greatly reduced. Screenings are fast, painless and low cost. Women's Health Screening Day offered by Goodall Hospital and its Center for Women's Health in Sanford on Oct. 4. York Hospital's Yoga Center at the Heart Health Institute offers yoga classes for all abilities. Seated yoga for those with limited mobility is offered as well. "Divorce & Beyond" groups, sponsored by Catholic Charities Maine Family Life Institute , offer hope and healing to those who are suffering the trauma of a lost marriage. Hospice of York's Living with Loss weekly bereavement support group is offered nearly continuously from now through the spring. There is no charge, and you need not have had a loved one serviced by hospice. Hospice of York encourages pre-registration; however, you may attend any or all of the classes as you see fit. The current session, facilitated by Mary Ellen Peterson and Linda Rees, continues on Thursdays, through Nov. 9. The three-week holiday session will be held on Nov. 30 and Dec. 7 and 14; t he winter session is set for Jan. 4 through 25, Feb. 1 through 22, and March 1 and 8, and the spring session will be held on March 29, April 5 through 26, and May 3 through 31. Support Victims of Domestic Violence by collecting old cell phones and ink jet cartridges and mailing them to the Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men and Women free of charge. The Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men and Women provides crisis intervention and support services to all victims of domestic violence and their families. Proceeds from this program will help the organization continue to provide services as well as support the 24-hour hotline. The York Hospital Breast Cancer Survivor Group , which meets the third Monday of the month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Ellis Conference Room at York Hospital, welcomes new members. Women who attend survivor groups cope better, heal more quickly and live longer. New members, whether or not their treatment was at York Hospital, are invited to come to the meetings and be with women who share their story. Friends are welcome too. During these meetings the members share information, coping tips and strategies, explore complimentary therapies, hear guest speakers, support each other, experience sisterhood, plan the Annual Walk for Hope and celebrate living.
