Mining MARVEL for homework help

By Assistant Director Sudie Blanchard

YORK VILLAGE - As school begins, we are noticing more and more students in the library, and we want to remind scholars everywhere that MARVEL, the collection of state-supplied databases, can simplify your research.

There's an easy link on our home page, www.york.lib.me.us, to this resource. The list of databases below will be especially helpful with homework - and best of all, they can be accessed either here in the library or from your internet-connected computer at home.

The following provide access to magazine articles on many topics:

KIDS SEARCH for elementary school students; MIDDLE SEARCH PLUS and MAS ULTRA for middle and high school students, and ACADEMIC SEARCH PREMIER for college-aged students.

The following three specialized databases may also prove useful to students:

STUDENT RESEARCH CENTER is designed particularly for students in grades 6 through 12. Check out the "visual searching" capability. ANNALS OF AMERICAN HISTORY is great for American history projects. LITERATURE RESOURCE CENTER is a fine resource for literary criticism on the classics, new and old.

These are only a few of the many MARVEL databases - there are many more on the list. Be sure to take a look, especially if there is a student in your life!

ONGOING ART EXHIBITS

The watercolors of South Berwick artist Dewitt Hardy are now on display at the library through the end of September.

York Art Association artist Alice B. Hogan's watercolors are now on display in the Kennebunk Room. Subjects of her work include Maine seascapes, landscapes of familiar Maine scenes as well as a couple from the Southwest, and people. Ms. Hogan has been a part-time resident of York since the late 50s. She spends the rest of the year in Maryland.
