York Town News

Steve Dunne got some good news last week. Tonight, the School Committee is going to be taking a long, hard look at the citizen-petitioned "Taxpayer Bill of Rights" or TABOR initiative, set to be on the ballot Nov. 7. A change in the ordinance combining nonconforming lots of record owned by the same person into one is among the lengthy list of ordinances that have been proposed and will appear on the Nov. 7 ballot. The Planning Board voiced support for conceptual plans for an Old York Historical Society education center at its most recent meeting, while the second phase of the Highland Farm subdivision received a lukewarm reception. The acceptance of Hickory Lane as a town right-of-way will not be on the ballot in November. Area spots to pick-your-own produce, take a hayride, etc. Ann Grinnell and Kathryn Strand of the Swim Center of Southern Maine still hope to bring a community pool complex to town, but after a disappointing outcome from a nearly six-month membership drive, they're trying a new approach. Local officials are making good on a pledge they made back in May, when a proposal to build an arts wing at York High School failed at the polls by a margin of 411 votes. While November may seem far away under these sunny September skies, absentee ballots will be available in less than a month, and voters will be heading to the polls in just about six weeks to decide an array of local, state and federal races as well as many key ballot issues. The Oct. 1 deadline for Citizen of the Year nominations for the annual honor sponsored by the Greater York Region Chamber of Commerce is just around the corner. The controversial town ordinance that combines non-conforming lots under the same ownership was at the center of another Appeals Board meeting last week.
