Make a difference on Mount A with Sept. 23 Community Workday
CAPE NEDDICK - The Mount Agamenticus Conservation Program is hosting a Community Volunteer Workday on Saturday, Sept. 23.Volunteers will work alongside the Conservation Crew to protect the habitat and biodiversity of the Mount Agamenticus Conservation Region. The task for the day is to restore the summit and nearby trails with native plants.
"Volunteers will be helping to plant with native perennials and shrubs to not only help beautify the mountain, but also to improve our erosion control efforts, protect wetlands down slope, deter invasive plant species, promote wildlife habitat and to help educate the public about our native landscape," noted Conservation Coordinator Robin Stanley in her announcement of the upcoming event.
Over the last six years, Mount Agamenticus has benefited from countless volunteers who donated their time, muscles and skills to improve the trail system, local water quality, wildlife habitat, and the overall visitor experience.
Plants have been selected by using recommendations from the Maine Natural Areas Program, Maine Department of Conservation, University of Maine Cooperative Extension in York County, New England Wildflower Society and from David Tibbetts of the York Conservation Commission.
Trail crews and volunteers have been working tirelessly to repair the area from nearly 30 years of neglect and restore trail compatibility with natural resource protection in the area.
"They have worked on projects to improve the trail system, reduce erosion, and have made many enhancements to the summit, lodge and workshop," Stanley said. "There have been many successes, however, there is still much more work to be done and we could use some help from you."
This project has been funded in part by the Nathaniel Wheeler Trust for the beautification of York and the York Parks and Recreation Department.
Contributions have also been generously received by the Lee Tree Co.
The workday will be held from 9 a.m. until noon, and each workday is usually held rain or shine. Please bring work gloves, sturdy shoes and food for a picnic lunch at the summit of the mountain.
Volunteers are asked to confirm their attendance in advance by contacting Robin Stanley at 361-1102.
Can't make this workday? There is one more community workday this year, scheduled for Oct. 15.
