The Figure in American Painting And Drawing at the Ogunquit Museum of American Art through Oct. 31. Gwen Wagor: A Garden on Paper on display at Heartwood College of Art from Oct. 11 through Nov. 3. Heartwood College of Art presents "Speak to the Color" Exhibition through Oct. 6. The Prints of Peggy Bacon at the Ogunquit Museum of American Art through Oct. 31. Margaret Frances (Peggy) Bacon (1895-1987) received The Gold Medal for Graphic Art from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. Bacon's works are represented in numerous public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the National Portrait Gallery, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the OMAA. "Real, Reproduction or Outright Fake" at the Old York Historical Society through Oct. 8. Not everything is what it appears to be, especially in the world of antiques and museum collections. What does a museum curator or collector look for to determine if a piece is real, reproduction or fake? A season-long exhibit in the Long Parlor Gallery of Old York's Emerson-Wilcox House will show examples of furniture, glass, ceramics, textiles and other decorative arts that will both test and inform the visitor about what to look for to determine authenticity and value. Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men and Women , a nationally known non-profit organization, is looking for volunteers to assist victims of intimate partner violence. Volunteers are needed to cover the organization's toll-free crisis line and ull training is offered. You may answer calls right from your home on weekdays, nights, weekends and/or holidays. The training is 40 hours and will consist of online and teleconferencing sessions. Volunteers must have access to a computer with an Internet connection. The Gateway Farmer's Market , held in the parking lot at the Greater York Region Chamber of Commerce Visitor's Center on Route One in York, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Oct. 7. Local farmers and specialty food producers will sell their fresh fruit, vegetables, pies, breads and more.

Home Schooling Club offers a chance to meet, socialize, have fun and take field trips with others from the community who home school just like you! Attend all of the activities or simply pick and choose from the calendar of events and activities. No commitment is required and all home schooled children are welcome to attend with their families. October events include a visit to the York Beach Fall Field for fun and exercise on Friday, Oct. 6, from 1 to 3 p.m. Bring items for playing baseball, football soccer or any other outside games. Visit Triple G Farm on Bog Road on Thursday, Oct. 12, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. and see the chickens, cows, sheep and even a pig. Learn about all of the animals, make your own felt from wool and learn the history of yarn. A $3 fee is due when permission slips are signed at the farm and the event will be held rain or shine. On Friday, Oct. 20, meet at the York Public Library's Children's Room for game time galore from 1 to 3 p.m. and, on Friday, Oct. 27, be a part of York's Costume Parade and Halloween Hop, beginning at Town Hall at 4:30 p.m. and ending at the York Public Library. Kindergym , offered by York Parks and Recreation Department, will begin on Friday, Sept. 29. No pre-registration is required and the cost is $4 per child/$6 per family per visit. Kindergym will be held at our new location, Blueberry Hill, Route 1 York on Friday mornings from 9:30 - 10:15 am. This program is ongoing; come and join us any Friday. We're looking for children who are walking up to age 3 to bring their parents along to our Kindergym program! This is an opportunity for the parent and child to engage in activities geared toward coordination, mobility and large motor skill development. It will also be a great social atmosphere for children and parents alike. This will be a wonderful bonding time for you and your child.

Music and Movement, a new monthly program for children ages 2 to 6, will begin on Wednesday, Oct. 4, at the York Public Library. This free parent-child class, held from 10:15 to 10:45 a.m. and taught by Michelle Franey of South Berwick, will focus on developing both musical and social skills, with emphasis on moving to the beat and learning traditional songs. HEALTH

American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 3, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Candleshop Inn in York Beach. Uniting nurses in healing has been the AHNA's mission since its founding in 1980, embracing nursing practices that foster wellness through a holistic approach to body, mind and spirit. The speaker for the evening will be Dr Jeff Donatello of York on "Chiropractic and its Role in Modern Medicine." Chiropractic is a health profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, and how these disorders can affect the function of the nervous system and general health. Chiropractic treatment includes spinal manipulation or adjustments, massage and education. Meetings are open to anyone who shares a similar interest in AHNA's mission of wellness. Life Line Screening will be at St. George's Episcopal Church in York Harbor on Oct. 20 with appointments to begin at 9 a.m. A stroke, also known as a "brain attack," is ranked as the third leading killer in the world, and the second among women. Through preventive screenings like this, the risk of having a stroke can be greatly reduced. Screenings are fast, painless and low cost. Women's Health Screening Day offered by Goodall Hospital and its Center for Women's Health in Sanford on Oct. 4. York Hospital's Yoga Center at the Heart Health Institute offers yoga classes for all abilities. Seated yoga for those with limited mobility is offered as well. Instructor Sundie Gentry is one of only eight yoga instructors in the state to be credentialed and certified by the Iyengar Yoga National Association of the United States. Coffee Shop at the Wells-Ogunquit Senior Center is open Monday through Friday, 9 to 11 a.m., serving regular or decaf coffee, pastries, Congdon's and Dunkin' Donuts, and their own blueberry muffins for $1.50. Thursday's Coffee Club occasionally has a guest speaker.

Angel Fund Italian Dinner , sponsored by St. Aspinquid's Masonic Lodge, will be held on Sept. 30 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the lodge's Long Sands Road location. All funds raised will go directly to local schoolchildren in need. Tickets will be available at the door and are $10 for adults and $6 for ages 17 and younger or 65 and older.

SUPPORT

Hospice of York's Living with Loss weekly bereavement support group is offered nearly continuously from now through the spring. There is no charge, and you need not have had a loved one serviced by hospice. Hospice of York encourages pre-registration; however, you may attend any or all of the classes as you see fit. The current session, facilitated by Mary Ellen Peterson and Linda Rees, continues on Thursdays, through Nov. 9. The three-week holiday session will be held on Nov. 30 and Dec. 7 and 14; t he winter session is set for Jan. 4 through 25, Feb. 1 through 22, and March 1 and 8, and the spring session will be held on March 29, April 5 through 26, and May 3 through 31. All sessions are held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the basement conference room of Medical Office Building 16 on the grounds of York Hospital. FMI: call 363-7000.

Support Victims of Domestic Violence by collecting old cell phones and ink jet cartridges and mailing them to the Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men and Women free of charge. The Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men and Women provides crisis intervention and support services to all victims of domestic violence and their families. Proceeds from this program will help the organization continue to provide services as well as support the 24-hour hotline. The York Hospital Breast Cancer Survivor Group , which meets the third Monday of the month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Ellis Conference Room at York Hospital, welcomes new members. Women who attend survivor groups cope better, heal more quickly and live longer. New members, whether or not their treatment was at York Hospital, are invited to come to the meetings and be with women who share their story. Friends are welcome too. During these meetings the members share information, coping tips and strategies, explore complimentary therapies, hear guest speakers, support each other, experience sisterhood, plan the Annual Walk for Hope and celebrate living.
