"Fall" for children's events and more at the York Public Library

By Assistant Director Sudie Blanchard

YORK VILLAGE - Children's events this fall include special events at the York Public Library.

On Friday, Oct. 27, ghosts and ghoulies invade. The library will once again be the scene of the Recreation Department's annual Halloween Hop following the Halloween Parade. Come... if you dare!

Friday, Nov. 3, is the York Schools' Family Literacy Night. The York Schools celebrate Family Literacy Month each year with an event-filled fair celebrating the joy of reading. This year's fair will get November off to a rousing start.

Festival of Lights events at the York Public Library begin on Friday, Dec. 1. The York Recreation Department will host a special evening focused on Chris Van Allsburg's "The Polar Express." Saturday, Dec. 2, the York Recreation Department will host "Breakfast with Santa" plus the library's second annual Gingerbread House Competition.

October is "Teen Read" month at the library. Don't miss these special events:

Tuesday, Oct. 3, at 3 p.m., White Pine Programs gives a program for middle school students. Come explore the wild plants and animal life of York Village. Take a peek at the natural mysteries that exist in our own backyards. Please come dressed to be outdoors.

Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 3 p.m., Rachel of ChildLight Yoga will be holding a yoga class for middle school students. Come if you've always wanted to learn more about it or if you are a yoga student who just wants more mat time.

Tuesday, Oct. 17, at 2:30 p.m., Kit Wang will be holding the first of two knitting sessions. These sessions are for beginning knitters, but more experienced knitters are welcome. If you want to make Kit's beginning project of a scarf, please bring a set of knitting needles (10-13 American or 6mm-9mm) and a two to 2 to 4 ounce skein of worsted or bulky yarn.

Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 2:30 p.m., Kit Wang will be holding the second of two knitting sessions. These sessions are for beginning knitters, but more experienced knitters are welcome. If you want to make Kit's beginning project of a scarf, please bring: a set of knitting needles (10-13 American or 6mm-9mm) and a 2 to 4 ounce skein of worsted or bulky yarn.

DIVERSITY ON DISPLAY

Oct. 6 is "National Diversity Day." The library will be recognizing diversity with an exhibit of books and other materials on that topic. The exhibit is co-sponsored with the York Diversity Forum, whose goals are to increase understanding and acceptance of people of different races, cultures, sexual orientations, religions, ages and abilities, and to reduce the incidence of prejudicial language and action in our community.

ART EXHIBITS

There are just a few days remaining to see the works of Dewitt Hardy at the library. On Oct. 3, an exhibit of the works of local artist Fran Scully will be hung, with a gallery talk to follow on Thursday, Oct. 12, at 6:30 p.m.

York Art Association artist Alice B. Hogan's watercolors are now on display in the Kennebunk Room. Subjects of her work include Maine seascapes, landscapes of familiar Maine scenes - as well as a couple from the Southwest - and people. Hogan has been a part-time resident of York since the late '50s. She spends the rest of the year in Maryland.

On Friday, Sept. 29, at 7 p.m., writers and listeners will assemble for a very special Writers' Night in memory of Mila Hoffman, co-founder of the "Public Reading for Local Writers" program featured at York Public Library. The readings will be both from Dr. Hoffman's work and the works of those she inspired.
